He has never made a really bad film, and not a terrible film.
Is a master film maker? No.

What he did with Trek was divisive, but at least Trek 2009 did break it free of some moorings. It did not do much afterwards, Into Darkness is a pretty good film- it was impressive in Imax- but only if you do not look at it as Trek. As for his Star Wars work, I though Force Awakens, within the very strict confines of what Disney gave him, worked pretty well, I think it is the best of the new Star Wars pictures so far. And he is a pretty good replacement for Trevorrow, and again, working within the
strict confines of Disney it will be a serviceable picture I am sure. What JJ brought to film was working for years within the business of television, which meant he knew efficiency of shooting and putting the dollars on the screen. As for his artistic choices - certainly up for debate, but the idea that he is a terrible director is silly.

He's a competent filmmaker in the sense he knows the ropes of film making. The quality of his films vary from entertaining (Mission Impossible 3) to atrocious (Force Awakens).

....WHY ALL THE HATE?!?!?!?!?!?!
I don't see why most of you bash him, and for that matter, his "composer of choice" Giacchino as well.

"Most of us"? Don't you mean a few frequent and incredibly emphatic board posters?

The auteur director is extinct over most of the planet.

Auteurs still exist, but you won't find them directing studio blockbusters or franchise films. No studio is going to trust their summer or Christmas tent-pole picture to an "auteur." If the director isn't with the program, he or she will be outta there. Auteurs either need to create a new franchise or stick to helming moderately budgeted studio programmers or personal, quirky independent films.

Well, there are some established auteurs working with studio blockbusters now and then too -- Scott, Spielberg, Burton, Tarantino etc. Or younger folks like Gareth Edwards, Denis Villeneuve etc. One may argue the quality of their films, but their auteur status cannot be argued. I'd say J.J. Abrams has some of that, but not quite. His visual style (like the lens flares) is easier to recognize than, say, Ron Howard or Richard Donner or Clint Eastwood, but he doesn't quite have the thematic or even stylistic thread running through his work to appropriate that term.

Abrams is fine. He's a superior craftsman, doesn't go to pieces under fire, is a safe pair of hands, and he couldn't make a bad movie if he tried. He's going to have a long-long career because the mainstream industry has always needed guys like that (eg Richard Fleischer, Robert Wise et al) to keep it ticking along and it always will.

PLUS Johnny Williams likes him and that's good enough for me. smile
