I must admit that I've gone from "Album presentation with missing music? Are you MAD?!?" to realizing that there are some C&C releases I have where I prefer the original album (Close Encounters, Innerspace). Or even the occasional score where I LOVE the C&C but the album is a nice quick shot (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Wrath of Khan). (I almost said Star Wars, but that still isn't "quick".) But in answer to the question? Totally going soft.

I recently bought the Jurassic Park-album by Lalaland Records, and to be honest, I find it quite hard to get through. The original album presentation is such a joy and the new music really - IMHO - doesn't add to much that wasn't already there. I guess there was a reason Williams left it off in the first place. Of course, if releasing C&C albums is the only way to keep scores in print or find enough buyers to release an out of print-score, I fully understand, but just speaking from the perspective of someone who just likes to listen to soundtrack music, for the music's sake and not to audibly relive the movie experience, I almost always enjoy the original soundtracks more.

If there is a score that you love that was never on album, do you consider buying the complete version if there is no alternative? I'm not sure about that specifically, but when I first bought North by Northwest I did so because it ws the complete McNeely rerecording. Funnily enough, I sold it when I heard the Johnson not-complete. The same happened with Torn Curtain. Bernard is one of my favorite composers, regardless of genre, but there was just too much Jeepers underscoring on both of those complete versions, and I even guess Bernard would have been weirded out by the inclusion of those cues. In the case of both Torn Curtain and NBNW, I also felt the Bernstein and Johnson recordings had a lot more edge to their sound, which made them more exciting. But that's just my opinion.
