This seems to be a somewhat enduring sub-genre of crime films. An aging criminal who has gone straight is asked to do one last gig, often promising an amazing payoff. Aging criminal is now wise. He does not want to do it, but reluctantly accepts. It typically does not end well.

What are some of your favorites? And are there any films in this category that challenge the conventions rather than reinforce them?

Try to avoid spoilers, if possible, although we can generally guess what happens.

Wouldnt follow every detail of your narrow criteria, but I would submit any upcoming film about the last presidential election.

Bob DiMucci will no doubt provide an exhaustive year-by-year list, so I'll just submit CITY OF INDUSTRY (1997). It's a favorite of mine, but don't expect anyone else to agree as to its quality. Me, I fooking love it. Great cast and some nasty-ass violence to boot. A tough little film ideally suited for 3:00 am viewing.

Sexy Beast - 10/10 ... sorry, wrong thread.

This is slightly different in that the protagonist is coerced into one last job by Ben Kingsley's terrifying Don Logan. A perennial favourite, even though we've gone off Ray Winstone a bit since he sold his soul to a sports betting company.

None come immediately to mind. Many crime films involve the concept of "one last job", but it's usually an active gang who we first see having early success. Then the bulk of the film follows them on that "last job." This year's BABY DRIVER followed that pattern. Dragging in an aging criminal gone straight is a variation on that theme, and doesn't occur in most of the "last job" films.

Even Heat has an element of that when the black gataway driver trying to go straight gives in to the lure.

Straight Time is interesting in that Hoffman tries to go straight and flips.

Tg is right, Sexy beast is a good choice - basically about how he resists the job and the outcome of that.

There's a ton of them...only I can't think of any right now. There's also the retired agent (CIA or other) asked to come out of retirement to sort something out that the young whippersnappers can't manage. They always say No! Never! But then they always do, otherwise it would be a very short film.

THE EIGER SANCTION -- although it's only decent, it's not a GREAT movie.

Isn't the RED movies all about this?

THIEF by Michael Mann.

THE SCORE (2001).

Good. Then this is my next screenplay!

THE EIGER SANCTION -- although it's only decent, it's not a GREAT movie.

Sure it's great, but that's irrelevant since it belongs on the list, just like overrated movies like THIEF. Speaking of Clint, THE UNFORGIVEN could fit in this subgenre. An okay variation is THE GOOD THIEF (2002).
A classic example of the subgenre is THE LAST RUN (1971) which I guess is noone's favorite since it's unmentioned.

May not fit the description exactly but "The Rock" comes to mind.

Wouldn't 'Tough Guys' fit this? Not so great a flick, mind you.

I suppose 'Unforgiven'?

It's not the crime world, but 'Spy Who Came In from the Cold'.

I suppose The Wild Bunch would count. After the failed bank robbery at the start, the Gorch Brothers said something like that was going to be their last. And later on, Pike says the train robbery was going to be his last & then he wants to back off (back off to what? Dutch answers).

1. EIGER is greatly entertaining, and THIEF was not (unless you mean the 1952 THE THIEF)(or even TO CATCH A THIEF).
2. On that alleged TREK parody, THE ORVILLE, a crewmember mentions he laid an egg because that's how his race reproduces. Why wouldnt a tv comedy about a super heroine exploit everyday biology like a woman's cycle in a cliche way? I'm not saying it's clever, just predictable comedy.
3. Dont interrupt!!

Well, since other members are straying from the strict "ex-con" definition, I'll stray further: BLADE RUNNER sort of fits into the tough-guy-forced-out-of-retirement-for-one-last-job genre.

"No choice, huh?"

"No choice, pal."

(Well, until BLADE RUNNER 2049 came along, I guess.... smile )
