It's nothing new. It's been working like this for at least 10 years now. It gets slow (or stops working altogether), the servers are rebooted or whatever, then it works for a few weeks, then it happens again. Rinse and repeat.

The only way to fix this problem is to have a complete reboot of the board -- including new and better servers for the amount of traffic the board is having. Lukas will -- understandably -- not pay for that himself. I've previously offered a 'donation' solution that might solve the financial aspect of this (I'm fairly confident most members would donate money to keep the board alive), but we haven't received any feedback on that as of now.

You'd think Lukas would be able to afford something better than a '55 Ford Fairlane to run this place. wink

Lukas has commented on it some. In January, 2016, he said:

The site slows down periodically and then becomes normal after a reboot. It's an ongoing memory issue that we've struggled to correct. Thanks for your patience and apologies for the inconvenience.

Lukas

He also said, but I couldn't find the quote, part of the problem was a lot of posted images and size, yet people keep posting not only images in the Now Playing threads, but large ones.

It would be nice it people stopped that. We got a Now Playing thread at MainTitles, and we don't do that and the threads is just fine.

I disagree with Justin. First of all, posting images/hotlinking isn't usually the issue in terms of server capacity. Second, it's really the host that should upgrade to account for traffic. Again, there is really only ONE obstacle in this case, and that is the money required to upgrade everything. I think we'd be able to come together and donate enough to make that happen.

Lukas also commented in another thread (2011):

We have almost 11,000 registrations. Alas, many are spambots, etc., but it is work to eliminate them. We also have a CD database that ties into the SAE store, six years of FSM Online content, 15 years of magazine pdfs, 14 years of blog posts... our message board was custom-built before there were such things as Vbulletin and I think if we were to start from scratch, there's no way we could keep the old posts and registrations, which would make many people unhappy.

Lukas

I for one don't want to lose the rich history of information and threads of various topics, so upgrading apparently isn't the way to go.

Also, Thor, you're not disagreeing with me -- I am only recanting what Lukas said and he would know better than you.

Not really, Justin. It would be a shame to lose the old posts etc., but hopefully, we would get some time to save some of the material before a changeover (copy/pasting to our own hard drive, like we did when the board changed around the millennium turnover). Having a properly working board -- perhaps even one more up-to-date and with more powerful server capacity -- is more important than keeping all of the previous posts since 2001, I think. Feel free to disagree (which you apparently do).

It's awful how slow and unresponsive this site is. Awful. After all this time, after all these years, the problem has not been solved by any stretch, nor has it been improved by any means. This is literally the only website that is so incredibly slow to load (so frequently) that I literally browse the internet in a separate window while I'm waiting. And how often do we see "dp" (double posts)? I don't visit this site nearly as often as I have in the past because my mind automatically bypasses it -- I am so accustomed to the frustration of waiting for it to load (or having it not load altogether) that it's become less and less worth the trouble of going for a visit these days. To be honest, there are one or two other factors, but the site's questionable functionality has absolutely played a part in the gradual decrease in the frequency with which I visit the site. The ridiculous slow response time or unresponsiveness is made even more glaring when I visit several other discussion forums on the net that consistently work just fine with "typical" internet speed.

I have to do this pretty much every time I try to get on to FSM. I have cleared everything out, which is done weekly, but still can visit multiple other sites as FSM is loading. Lukas must not want any help financially to improve it or it would have been done by now.

What are YOU talking about?!? Did your all-seeing Millennial eyes miss the embedded "YouTube" video of the finale to La Dolce Vita in the initial post? It ain't yer garden variety Star Wars Muzak, but it IS film music.

Stop seeing what you want to see and start seeing the whole picture.

Damned FSM rookies.

I don't care if you were the first Baby Boomer to high step it out of their mammy's womb after VJ Day, this board is S---L---O---W.

Remember the magazine days when you read a letter by someone and you wanted to reply, it took some 2 months to get printed! Now that's slow!
