I've really enjoyed the film work of Muhly that I've heard so far (JOSHUA, THE READER, KILL YOUR DARLINGS). This could be an interesting fit. I'll have to tune in and see/hear how it turns out. Any other interested parties out there?
Damn! I came home from a break abroad and found this is 2 episodes in. I've just listened to the opening titles on the i-player and it's textbook Muhly. String orchestra dominated and quite tuneful and bittersweet. I don't normally do stuffy costume dramas, but I will give this a go to hear the music proper. The CD is forthcoming. Anyone watching/listening?
Richard Robbins is a tall order to follow, but I'm willing to give this score a go if it gets a release.
You speak the truth! Robbins flew under the radar for many, but his work during this decade often blew me away. HOWARDS END and MAURICE are two of my favorite 80s soundtracks that I’d put up there with Jerry and Johnny and all the rest. (And on the dramatic side, no one will ever EVER come close to Emma Thompson as Margaret.)
The story is a great dramatic opportunity so I’ll be excited to see and hear the new work.
I never managed to get through this series. Upper class British period dramas ain't really my thing, but the episode I did manage (well, half of.. the first one) offered up some seriously good Muhly music, so the gamble on the CD wasn't THAT much of a gamble. Plus, I have his other score CD's and find some great stuff in all of them! Anyway. It's here. I got it. And it's ripping me up man! This is the kinda stuff I love. It's raw and beautiful and it hurts the heart! There are bits that really do cut straight through..in that sad, aching good way. It is almost chamber-like, so don't go expecting any big symphonic stuff. Strings..piano. Modern classical-vibe, but just what I wanna hear these days. If you've liked his stuff in JOSHUA, THE READER or KILL YOUR DARLINGS.. BUY THIS CD!!!
I watched it a few days ago, but I say that the movie showed in a different way the concept of tolerance and acceptance of others' opinions. The core book better explains people's attraction to each other and the differences between ways of life.
