Can't wait to have the Spice Mines and Kessel Run explained!! I wonder how old I will be before EVERY mystery, or indeed, even a dropped line I heard in a film I saw growing up, will have been exploited and dissected, thus ruining the whole point of it in the first place. Think up some new shit people!!!

Yeah, it's a throw away line. We hardly need a subplot around it. They're just hanging onto nostalgia for the die hard fans who eat it all up.

I go through this same conundrum with my fellow PLANET OF THE APES fans, what I call "The Trekkie Continuity Syndrome," the anal-compulsive need to have everything fit together and explained. One thing that always makes me laugh is the number of Trekkies that actually believe the so-called "Science of Star Trek" is actually possible (and we've had heated debates about it here), but more importantly the entire plausibility of it in the first place.
I was thinking about this watching the new show last night. It's set like what, just two to three hundred years in the future? We're not going to have all that miraculous technology in just that amount of time. Sure, it seems like we've come along way with technology in the last hundred years, but look what happens after just a hurricane -- and the power lines go down and you're right back in the 19th century. So much for technology.
Star Trek should be set two thousand years in the future, and even then, I doubt we'd have all that technology -- or speak English any longer.
And the original PLANET OF THE APES was set two thousand years in the future, but how could anything in that movie have happened in such a short period of time, from the apes evolving to near human beings, to the landscape of New Jersey/New York turning into Arizonia.
But then we have to have the sequels in the early seventies try to explain it all, and all they really did was spoil and make ridiculous the wonderful ambiguities of the original film. There was no explaining because that's not the point. It's isn't that kind of Science Fiction, it's fiction disguising itself as SF. Scientifically, PLANET OF THE APES is complete nonsense -- even the new trilogy.
And so is Star Trek. ST is essentially allegory about our current selves and our cultures. Pretend that it can really happen, and you are as a child. Try to explain it scientifically, and you're a Trekkie!
