As the days near where I'll be unpacking my FSM Ben Hur Complete Collection my expectation level goes skyscraper. I've purposely left off even listening to BH until that box arrives in the mail. I'm so happy my s.o. gifted me this! Rozsa has firmly taken his place along with Bernard as my favorite film composer. I haven't heard a bad score from him yet, the man just seemed to have the touch. I am hoping to fill out my late-era collection by him as well. But...BEN HUR! King of scores. I think the only score I like as much is Vertigo.

Can't wait to hear what you think of it -- the FSM is definitive in every way, aside from obviously not including music that Rozsa wrote but didn't record...thank goodness James rescued some of that amazing lost material for his Tadlow recording! Don't miss the incredible online liner notes for their release when it comes in: https://filmscoremonthly.com/notes/ben_hur.html Yavar

Oh and Yavar, I can't rave enough about Rozsa Conducts Rozsa! I was quite happy to find a ton of excellent music on that CD. He truly was great.

So any idea if your s.o. might splurge on the Treasury set for X-Mas? Yavar

I've bought literally dozens of CDs in the past few months, and love the vast majority of them (have been playing Silver Chalice a lot). So I kind of shot myself in the foot...but who knows I might run into some extra moolah soon. Silver Chalice? (I hope you got the incredible FSM restoration and not some bootleg version.) Since I now know that you are both a Newmaniac and Waxmaniac like me, I must highly recommend the Kritzerland remastered reissue of Waxman's Demetrius and the Gladiators, fantastic sequel score to Newman's The Robe where he further develops Newman's incredible themes and adds some of his own. (I also have the FSM but it was one of their earlier releases and the more recent Kritzerland has far eclipsed it in sound quality even though the FSM has superior liner notes.) I would argue that Waxman treats Newman's themes just as well as Herrmann did for The Egyptian. Yavar

I was wondering about Demetrius, on my list. If you love The Robe it's a must. As for the Chalice, there is no other version for me other than the FSM (though the cover kind of weirds me out they did an excellent job). It is kind of a weird cover but I think we have the original poster to blame! Same thing with the LLL cover for Newman's A Certain Smile, which was designed by the great Jim Titus but the original elements look weird to me: https://sdtom.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/a-certain-smile.jpg In regard to Waxman, I'm an absolute nut over Peyton Place, Rebecca. I never really gelled with Sunset Boulevard musically but my GOSH what fantastic movie. Do you only have the Varese re-recording? (Do you not care for the score in the film?) I found I appreciated the score as music much more after I got the Counterpoint release of the original tracks (sadly not complete due to some of the score being lost to time): http://www4.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/14562/SUNSET-BLVD-SUNSET-BOULEVARD-2CD/ Yavar
