This article also puts Baby Driver as a major contender, and will probably be inelegible too. Yeah, I saw Baby Driver twice, and the score is relatively negligible, especially since the songs are the (apologies) driving force in every way -- in at least one scene, even the gunshots are timed to match the song.

Also, there's no way Price would be nominated for Baby Driver, a film 99% dominated by songs, let alone be a major threat. What about Michael Gore's Fame? and Detroit? How long is the score according to JNH? 10 minutes? WHAT ABOUT MICHA... nevermind. The Empire Strikes Back and The Elephant Man died in vain.

The rules were such in 1980 that the Fame song score was actually eligible for Original Score, so even though it didn't deserve to beat any of its wonderful four competitors (Altered States, Elephant Man, Empire Strikes Back, Tess), it did genuinely qualify.

As far as Williams and Scott -- here's an interesting bit of trivia: Howard Blake revealed in an interview years ago that Scott wanted Blake to score Alien, but Fox said "No, we are only considering two composers to score this film -- Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams." Would have been interesting if Williams had done Alien, and if he had, he might well have done Legend as well.

Confirmed in a Films and Filming interview with JW, that he "might" do the film. I've never forgotten it.

Also, I read he wanted Isao Tomita, but it was the studio who wanted Goldsmith or Williams. I think somebody else was asked but turned it down, though I might be confusing that with another film.

I think Williams would have written a better Alien score than Goldsmith (sorry). But I'm glad he didn't do Alien because it might have kept him from scoring Dracula.
