Attention U.S. TCM Subscribers: Concluding TCM's 1947 film noir triumvirate this week is perhaps the classification's finest, Out of the Past. (For a review plus Thursday's showtime information throughout the U.S., click here):

The idea was not to repeat posts, only to let people know each time a great film like this plays on TCM.

Arthur, just ignore this. I can't imagine being such an anal retentive board cop to have actually bothered going searching for the old threads. This kind of mentality on something so vacuous is very disturbing.

It's just that every one of your threads are merely redirects to your blog. You don't bother to foster any discussion here when anyone bothers to comment. smile

That's not true. I respond all the time, like I'm responding to you now and on your earlier post. You post a happy face after you level several different critical attacks. I don't get it. Yes, I announce a film coming up on TCM and a link to my review of the film. I respond all the time. Do I need to respond to every single statement made by someone on a film that I am recommending? I don't see any o.p. doing that on any post, besides one can simply see the heading and pass it by. With the rate of people posting it will drop off the first page fast.

Oh my God,

I appreciate links to other threads appearing on my posts. But to put a TCM recommendation with no heading at the end of someone else's thread of a film defeats the purpose of alerting people to *the film playing on T.C.M*! That is my main purpose here. One can, and perhaps you and Jim should, skip any post of mine altogether if they annoy you for not being included elsewhere or include links to one's blog, or are not responsive enough, etc. etc.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree on that. But hey -- as long as I can continue posting links to previous, more informative threads on said film and score, I'm fine with you doing new threads.

Never quite understood why this film is considered the best or one of the best film noirs.
I mean, c'mon, Kirk Douglas is in it ferevvinsakes!

THOR: Your "...previous more informative threads on said film and score..." is unnecessary. I'll try again. The first and foremost purpose of my posts re TCM broadcasts is to alert people to the fact that the films are about to be aired on TCM. If I tag it on another post no matter how brilliantly informed it is, viewers will not be immediately alerted that the film is about to play on TCM (they don't even have to click on my post when they see the heading, much less my blog review of the film, they can go right to the TCM schedule).

While I was poking gentle fun at the repetition of the Out of the Past threads--shame on TCM for airing it and other well-worn classics so often; it's one of many, many reasons why I have not bothered with cable or tv in general going on six years.

The smilies in my previous post were not intended as sarcasm or hostility. Online communication via typing is always a perilous venture.

However, my initial point stands: I will happily read and comment on posts about the films you discuss if they are followed up here, but I have little to no inclination to bounce around the internet to read material from FSMers that could be posted here and followed up with quality discussion on this forum.

You are probably... no I can read the numbers... you *are* in the vast majority here. Very few connect to my site to read my reviews, so your proclamation as truthful as it is, simply states the obvious. But be honest: Are you saying that a post of mine whereby there is a lengthy discussion (of which I have little control of anyway) on the thread itself is more likely to make you want to "bounce around the internet to read material..." etc.? If that is truly the case then you certainly by now have at least read what I wrote on Out of the Past! Any comment on my review, and then we can really get this thread going! wink

As I said, Arthur, I have no problem with you creating new 'TCM alert' threads for these things, but I hope -- then -- that you can also appreciate some of us posting links to previous threads where more or less in-depth discussion about the film and score has been held. It adds context, and avoids unnecessary repetition for those of us have already aired a great many thoughts about said titles. I can a) copy/paste what I wrote there into this new one, b) write the same things all over again or c) provide a link. As you can imagine, the latter is easier.

How generous of you. I certainly don't have a problem with you adding links to this type of thread. But I took a look at the link you added to this particular thread, and we will have to agree to disagree that your thread generated a meaningful "discussion," much less an "in-depth" one.

Arthur, I find this type of alert thread very useful, indeed much more useful than the irrelevant nitpicking from the thread police wannabes, and appreciate the effort to let us know when some of these films are being shown. Please continue!

Whether the thread then generates any further substantive discussion is, as far as I am concerned, merely icing on the cake. There should be room for a number of different types of threads on this board.

Thanks so much for your support. I already told Thor that any links on these TCM notices of mine are welcome. I too find it baffling that a few have found it necessary to criticise my posts for whatever reason but then return again and again.

That's why I said 'more or less'. Sometimes there are, sometimes there is not. Either way, it's more convenient with a link than re-writing the same things. Is that really so hard to understand? I'm going to keep on doing that for every time there's a topic I'm interested in, but where I've already given several thoughts in a previous thread, just as I've done for 20 years here on FSM. If that aggravates you, I suggest you look elsewhere or put me on ignore.
