Dave, my employer has done the same thing. They matched my Harvey, Irma and Maria donations. If folks check with their employers, they may find that they do the same. Thanks for sharing this info.
Americans will donate tons of money for disaster relief, no doubt. And that's good.
On the subject of "dollar matching" (while NOT discussing politics, per se), if you are into politics and get those fund raising emails that claim your donation will be multiple-matched by some rich dude, forget it. Political fund raising emails are notoriously dishonest about the existence of dollar matches because it vastly increases the number "little guys" who will send money. The emails just lie; they make up imaginary matches to loosen the wallets of rank-and-file supporters, and it works.
I'm sure Walmart and the like will be audited and policed in their charitable fund raising, and they wouldn't dare pull a fast one. But the Federal Election Commission (U.S.) is a very sleepy watchdog, and our campaigns get away with murder.
