Quite happy with the RYKO release. Played it ALL last night - What an emotional listen!

I'm stupid crazy about it. There's not a day I DON'T listen to it.

However, I couldn't help but grab the Varese as well. Heck, I grabbed both the Intrada and Prometheus Conan the Barbarian and I don't even (quite) like that score as much as GSET.

GSET is becoming a top five favorite score for me, sitting alongside Bernard and Miklos's work.

I'm glad to hear it. Your avatar says it all.

Wow! I love the score too, but it doesn't top The Robe for me. I think I might also like David and Bathsheba better. Guess I've gotta listen to all of them again to double check! smile

Well geez Yavar you just named all my Newman favorites! I have the two disc Robe and practically worship it. As far as D&B I think it was you who turned me onto it, and the Kritzerland is really killer.

Any of those three could be someone's favorite, they're terrific imo. The only score I need to listen to more is The Egyptian. La La Land did a fine job, but the score itself hasn't completely hit me yet, mostly I had fun picking out the most obviously Bernard and Alfred portions smile

It was and I'm glad it was a hit with you! Now get thee to the Screen Archives release of Captain from Castile for something very different but still amazing. smile

As I think I told you before, The Egyptian took a while to grow on me but now it's one of my absolute favorites. And the Naxos/Marco Polo recording cond. Stromberg is the best anyone has ever done at re-recording Newman, IMO. (Actually it might be the only time that anyone has re-recorded Newman satisfactorily, including their earlier Newman album which suffered from being one of their early efforts and not having enough time for the recording sessions.) Since it's so inexpensive you should check it out too.

One thing that is remarkable to me about The Egyptian is how well the music flows with two very different but very talented composers working on it. There is an action cue or two that sticks out as Herrmann, but for the most part he really made his stuff flow and fit in with Newman's material (and using his themes) incredibly well, to the point that for years and years people assumed that several key Herrmann cues were actually composed by Newman. And I think Nefer Nefer Nefer is one of Herrmann's great love themes (or great themes, period), with him writing in more of a Newmanesque vein than usual.

I'm giving both the LLL Egyptian and Stromberg Hunchback a closer listen tonight. It's just...I've listened to so much of Bernard's music so often (for weeks it was mostly what I listened to, and the collection is nice! smile ). It's pretty easy for me to pick him up...

aw heck I need to get to listening again. Be back!

How complete are these recordings? Is there more music as yet unreleased?

All I'm saying is if you're underwhelmed by Hunchback, make a point of seeing the film sometime and hearing the original recording of it. I think your opinion of the score will improve. smile Probably Newman's best of the 30s.

Agreed. I find the Morgan-Stromberg Hunchback to be one of their weaker efforts and that the music sounds better in the film (I sure hope there are some extant tapes of the original recording). The re-recording is also missing a good chunk of music from the film such as the entire Court of Miracles sequence.

Are you referring to the choral celebration when they crown the hunchback King of the Fools? "Quasimodo, Quasimodo..!" It is the punchline of the whole sequence, but the Marco Polo recording gives us the build-up without the climax. Other than that unfortunate disappointment, I'm very fond of the CD, as I usually am when John and Bill are involved.

As to the "Magi" cue, I dearly wish the disc had included the version we hear in the film. I never noticed the resemblance to that "Robe" theme. I'll have to give it another listen.
