Earlier this year J.J. Abrams said Mark Hamill should win an Oscar for his performance in THE LAST JEDI. And in THE LAST JEDI trailer titled Tempt he shows his acting chops. I hope he gets an Oscar.

I'm pretty sure it was Rian Johnson, the director, who made this statement, not JJ Abrams, unless I am misremembering the quote.

I know Rian Johnson is the director of THE LAST JEDI, but I'm sure Abrams said it earlier this year. I just googled it. Maybe Johnson said it too?
Awards Circuit currently has Hamill at #25 on their list of predictions for Supporting Actor, using Stallone's nomination as Rocky in the recent "Creed" as a precedent for MH's possible nomination.

I seriously doubt that's going to happen. I would also be surprised if he got nominated in the first place. Not because of Hamill's acting chops, but because of the film it is attached to. STAR WARS is not going to win the "heavy" awards.
Interesting idea. He pinnacled with, "you've failed, your highness. I, like my father before me, am a Jedi." I mean, you can crack up just saying a line like that, but I never forgot it. He cemented the image the character could not be budged, moved or otherwise subverted in the full conviction of his way.
Another thing is he's so very good in public. He has audiences eating out of his hand. But as to whether you get an Oscar for something which has become breakfast, lunch and dinner combined . . . who knows?
I am a card-carrying fan of Mark's. Various reasons beyond his role in Star Wars too.
He's also a pretty good actor - usually in more villainous roles, though they tend to be lesser affairs like Hamilton or Slipstream. Do I think he'll get an Oscar nod? Eh... I would like to see it, sure - but I'd also like to see one for other character actors first like Jürgen Prochnow, Frank Langella...
But maybe Mark "brings the noise" this time around. We'll see.
Hamill has typically been a deeply terrible actor. I like what I know of him, and he's been a good voice actor, but the prospect of him winning an Oscar is kind of laughable.
We all know it ain't going to happen. I'd love it to, like lots of others. The best possible outcome is that he could get it for being such a icon in lots of people's minds, and he at last as an older guy suddenly pulls off a great performance. In other words it would be his total contribution to cinema. Which given the original Star Wars' original boost to cinema in the late 70s cannot be overlooked.
Personally I think he should win an award for being the best (voice) Joker. He is definitely fantastic in this role.
