In the John Lennon vs. Paul McCartney arguments, I'm usually a Paul supporter but I have to say his "Wonderful Christmastime" is a very disappointing Christmas track... Yeah, I agree with all of the above. I love Paul's music, but not in this case. One listen was more than enough... I can remember the first time I heard and saw it on tv. As a Beatles fan, I could not believe how boring and dull it was/is! The man who gave us so many great songs throughout his career and this was the best he could do? Obviously the idea is to be simple, but there's simple and then just well... pretty dumb! So, yes I'm afraid Lennon's is better by a country mile. At least it sounds like a proper John Lennon song. Macca's sounds like an amateur who couldn't be bothered. A true missed opportunity. For what it's worth, I'm not really fond of the Lennon track either. As a huge Beatles fan, it gives me no pleasure to say that, but it's true. It's just that the Lennon track is less annoying than the McCartney track... By the way, dbrooks, you might be right about the synths being the key culprit... You have a point about the least worst bit, but I still think it's way better. As for synths? Synths are no better or worse than an orchestra (ok I know a full orchestra doesn't really have any competition in this matter), it's what is done with it that really matters. And Paul just sits around and messes about! Ding dong, ding dong... We KNOW he's just having a laugh and he probably would say it's the same as pulling a Christmas cracker with no more importance than that, but my goodness this is the man who gave us HEY F****G JUDE! lol. Even a bit of fun deserves more concentration than his Yuletide offering.

If this song were done on say, acoustic guitar (in a strumming style similar to "Mull of Kintyre"), were only 2/3 the length, sped up a little as well, it might not be so bad as a kind of "sit around the campfire and strum a silly tune" song. And like you said, remove the superfluous "Ding Dong, Ding Dong" crap, and to me, it really wouldn't be any worse than Lennon's. Just my opinion, though. I'm sure millions would differ...

You've got something there. If it had a campfire feel, or in this instance a 'round the fireplace' feel, it might scrape by. As it is it sounds manufactured and churned out in a way very little of his other work does. And we get it EVERY CHRISTMAS! Roy Wood was inspired by this guy, and yet HIS Christmas song is a classic!

In order of songs I hate most: The Chipmunk song: Alvin and the Chipmunks are fingernails on a chalkboard to me All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, and other Christmas songs sung in a kid's voice. Ugh. Santa Baby Wonderful Christmastime 12 Days of Christmas: A painfully repetitive song that goes on endlessly Runner-up: although their heart was in the right place, and I like the performances and music of the original release: Do They Know Its Christmas?: Listening to it now the lyrics seem more condescending than anything. Also, at some point Bono sings "Thank God it's them instead of you" or something to that effect. Not the best line from a song meant to create empathy.

But as for the various remakes.... it just goes downhill....

Gentle sarcasm vs personal insult. Maybe you're using a sledgehammer to crush a nut, but I'll plough on and reply as I was going to, to a less savage response that I wrongly expected. We all have our childhood favourites based around the old speeding up the voices trick (who as a kid in the age of vinyl hasn't roared with laughter at playing records at the wrong speed?, and we did get the Chipmunks in the Uk in the 60s). Mine was Ken Dodd and the Diddymen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGor7ZyCawI The Smurfs are rather timely for me as I hear them on a regular basis. My local pub has a song on the jukebox as a default track. Every time it pops up someone rushes to put on a song to get rid of it!

No problem. Considering the amount of US-UK folks on here (I know there's loads of others, erm.. Thor and of course MANY others) it's only natural that sometimes the wires will get crossed. Hey, we're only SUPPOSED to speak the same language...

I haven't yet read this entire thread so far, but I've read far enough that I know I want to go on record registering this opinion: I love "Wonderful Christmas Time." Sue me.
