Wanted to let folks know that film composer/keyboardist/inventor Jack Cookerly passed away on September 13, 2017. Jack was an incredibly talented and important musician in the field of electronic music, even though he kept in the background much of the time. He was responsible for some of the inventions that led to the modern synthesizer.

We featured some of Jack's brilliance in our Monstrous Movie Music releases "Kronos/"The Cosmic Man," "It! The Terror from Beyond Space," and "Missile to the Moon." He also created many of the futuristic sound effects used in the original "Star Trek" series. Jack Cookerly was a wonderful person and true friend, and I shall miss him. He was lucky to be married to sweet Arnette, and vice versa.

You can hear some of his work here:

I'm presently wrapping up a music chapter about the 1959 film THE ATOMIC SUBMARINE, which contains a wealth of Jack's contributions.

Aww, thanks for letting us know. I liked knowing he was still around and was able to contribute to the LLL Trek set. I hope he got to enjoy a copy, especially since Fred Steiner and Alexander Courage missed it by a few years.

Cookerly's sounds were HUGE for a certain style/period of film music. He almost seemed to have a kind of double act going on with Elliott Fisher (on electric violin) for many shows and films. smile Beautiful sounds - astral music par excellence!

I hope he had a good life.

He also played one of the first synthesizers on the music for "The Jetsons" and used a cloth covered hammers to softly hit the tubes like an xylophone. According to Cookerly, it was assembled from "two orange crates".

I'm a longtime fan of Mr. Cookerly's otherworldly sounds, so I was happy to learn yesterday about his involvement with a certain score for THE TIME TUNNEL (per the liner notes of the new LLL release devoted to that series.) This revelation has inspired me to break out my copies of the above-mentioned MMM releases and get reacquainted with them. Fantastic stuff!
