I received the 5-disc SUPERMAN (1978-2006) Blu-ray box for Christmas, and I'm wondering if anyone here has info on the deluxe 8-disc set.

The 5-disc box has everything in the 8-disc set except:

- The 188-minute Extended Cut of Sup-1

- The Donner Cut of Sup-2

- The Bonus Disc

Neither box has the 151-min Special Edition of Sup-1, but I have that on DVD, and I have the Donner cut of Sup-2 already.

I'm wondering if I should spring for the 8-disc box. It comes down to the Extended Cut and the Bonus Disc.

- Any thoughts on the Extended cut would be helpful. Thanks to this thread...

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=121420&forumID=1&archive=0

...we have a pretty good rundown of the extra scenes, but I can't decide how bad I want it.

- What is on the Bonus Disc? The 5-disc set has so many extras already, I'm wondering what it could be. Thanks!

I love the extended (188 min.) cut of Superman: The Movie. Others call it "filler", including Richard Donner. But then again, he calls the 151 min. cut "too long". roll eyes

No the 188 minutes version is only available through warner archive. The 151 minutes version along with extras is also included in this bluray set

Not to get sidetracked from the original Superman, but where can one still get the theatrical version of Superman II on Blu-Ray???

Ah, so I had it wrong. The 8-disc set has the Expanded Edition (151 min), not the Extended Cut (188 min). So in order to have absolutely everything, I would have to buy the 8-disc set plus the separate Extended Cut release.

It comes down to special features (on the Donner-II disc and Disc 8) versus the 188-minute TV version.

I'm leaning toward the Extended Cut. That giant, kitchen-sink TV version seems more important. In TV terms, it's a full-blown mini-series.

Thank you, Christian R. for the Super Info.

The 5-disk box set I just got has it.

https://www.amazon.com/Superman-Complete-Collection-1978-2006-Blu-ray/dp/B009CSWBZS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514818622&sr=8-1&keywords=superman+5+film+collection+blu-ray

At the moment it's only $25, but like a lot of goodies on Amazon, it fluctuates up and down like crazy. At this price, to get so much on Blu-ray including the theatrical S-II, I would grab it.

Wow. So that's still in print, and not an older title you bought second hand? If so, I'll look into getting it. Thanks... smile

It's new. It ships from England, but it's region-free and plays fine on my U.S. machine. For the money, this is a steal.

Are Valerie Perrine's Playboy pictorials included as a special feature?

My copy of the Extended Cut arrived today:

https://www.amazon.com/Superman-Movie-Extended-Special-Collection/dp/B075TDZV1P/

Naturally I'm at work and don't know when I'll be able to schedule a proper viewing. The thing to do is make it a two-night event, like it was in its original broadcast.

I assume the 188-minute Extended Cut is framed for 16x9, and thus it's really a modern re-creation of the TV print.

In the review of the Blu-Ray extended TV edition on Blu-ray.com.

'For many years, it was assumed that the Salkinds' Extended Cut existed only in the form of a pan-and-scan 1.33:1 standard definition video master prepared for broadcast. But then one of those surprise discoveries occurred that sometimes happens in a massive archive like Warner's: a complete film source of the Extended Cut in Superman's original widescreen aspect ratio. (More on that in the "Video" section below.) After a substantial restoration effort, this long-sought-after version of the film is being released on Blu-ray by the Warner Archive Collection, paired with a copy of Richard Donner's Special Edition. The Special Edition is the remastered disc first seen in the 2011 Superman Motion '

If I recall correctly, the break comes just when Superman flies up to grab Lois from falling from the helicopter. smile
