Hokay, I am at a crossroads for my next Maestro Goldsmith purchase: it's either the obviously amazing La La Land Star Trek: TMP or the FSM-is-raving-about the Quartet Papillon. I have absolutely no copies of either score. Which one would you grab first? FSM members are the folks I come to first on issues like this, and I'm super grateful for all the help! I have QB vii coming in the week (Tadlow) and am currently going crazy over the Tadlow Blue Max!

Um, to be perfectly honest it's pretty great...but only 1000 copies were made earlier this year and it sold out in a matter of days. I'm quite certain it can't be found anywhere for a reasonable price. Maybe it'll get a rerelease someday. Maybe it'll get a digital release. But don't spend a ton of money on an OOP title when there's a great in-print title available for its original price. Get Star Trek from LLL. And with Goldsmith there are so many great scores that you'll be occupied for a while with what's currently available and can pick up reissues along the way when they come out. Then if you've already exhausted all the in print stuff at some point you can start working your way through the expensive OOP items... Yavar

Hmm, I guess the Star Trek is a no-brainer huh? Oh, off topic, the Kritzerland How Green Was My Valley...WOW!

LLL ST:TMP is no brainer. Its a labor of love. Quartet's PAPILLON should be equally great. I have yet to open up my copy but I'll keep you posted when I experience it. Both are essential. From my fellow Herrmann-phile! Man, I checked out the old clips on youtube and really liked Papillon. But Star Trek...I was there when that movie came out and it was a stinker (imo), but the music was so enchanting. It made the movie seems significantly better than it was...kind of like Rozsa's score for Sodom and Gomorrah in that sense!

Loooooks like I can get Star Trek TMP, Papillon, and the deluxe version of Poltergeist for the same price. Yow, decisions, decisions.

Papillon is a magnificent score--there's no reason to measure it against TMP (although you can find the origins of Goldsmith's Klingon theme in Papillon). If you can't find Quartet's version there's at least one French CD of it out there. Agreed. It's my all time fave Goldsmith score. The expanded release is terrific.

I'll sell you my copy for cost if you're interested. Uh, wow -- WA you should actually really take BTTFFan up on his generous offer. Could be making a huge profit selling it secondhand. It is one of Goldsmith's best scores and while it will probably be released again, it could take years. Yavar

The Quartet PAPILLON is a dramatic sonic improvement over all previous releases of this score. The same cannot be said about the LLL release of ST:TMP (nothing wrong with it, it just didn't leave that much room for sonic improvement) Not sure what you mean… the sound on the La-La Land ST:TMP is much improved over all previous versions. However, I do agree that Wagner Almighty ought to snag a copy of the more rare Quartet Papillon than ST:TMP, which is still in print and will be available for the foreseeable future..

No doubt, as long as it's somewhat affordable. Same goes for the FSM Poltergeist. But I imagine both will be reissued eventually at a reasonable price, being some of his most beloved works. So I wouldn't recommend spending more than $40 on either, especially when there are so many other great Goldsmith things to get. Yavar
