Are they indeed lost? I do have the Varese CD as well as the new blue LP that came recently, but from what I understand, this is a re-recording that Conti put together many years ago. I’m wondering if we will ever see a complete, original release. Any comments? Varèse has issued two versions of the score. One was a 1986 recording of excerpts from that score and Conti's "North & South." In 2009, they put out a limited Club release of excerpts from the original recording (this is the same contents as that blue LP you mention), sourced from tapes for a planned album release concurrent with the film that never came to fruition. There are so many others such Goldsmith’s UNDER FIRE which just happened to lose to Conti’s Score that year. Those tapes seem to be lost. Well, just remember that keeping things properly filed and stored is expensive, and a studio only makes a few thousand dollars on an archival release of a film score, so it's not really hard to see how this isn't really a priority. The full original score release remaining a holy grail for me. Among the "missing" elements are the synth sessions which were conducted separately form the orchestral sessions. They really do "screw the pooch" and take the viewer--well, this viewer--out of that era the film otherwise does so well in conveying. Love the North and South material on that album, too. One of Varese's finest releases. As someone who usually dislikes synth mixed with orchestra, I think the synth work here are some of the highlights of the score. The music playing after Yeager hit the sound barrier and does the barrel roll is really spine tingling. The in camera model shots, visual optical effects, sound effects and music are incredible. I'm so used to the original release (the one paired with North and South) that the synths, especially, seem truly out of place. Yeah, the Conti/LSO CD by Varese is one of their finest EVER!
