So, what is the story on the original tapes for the score? Are they indeed lost? I do have the Varese CD as well as the new blue LP that came recently, but from what I understand, this is a re-recording that Conti put together many years ago. I’m wondering if we will ever see a complete, original release.

Any comments? Thanks...:-)

By all reports, the original session tapes are lost.

Varèse has issued two versions of the score. One was a 1986 recording of excerpts from that score and Conti's "North & South." In 2009, they put out a limited Club release of excerpts from the original recording (this is the same contents as that blue LP you mention), sourced from tapes for a planned album release concurrent with the film that never came to fruition. This is evidently the only extant material from the film recording.

It truly amazes me that the original tapes from a score that won an Oscar can get “lost”. There are so many others such Goldsmith’s UNDER FIRE which just happened to lose to Conti’s Score that year. Those tapes seem to be lost.

At least we have the wonderful FSM CD of UNDER FIRE to cherish - my top favorite Goldsmith score and CD!:-)

MV said this was Varese in perp so it's down to them.

"It's my understanding that only Varese can release the Right Stuff since they have the rights in perp (it has to do with the re-recording they did years ago with North and South). So, only Varese can do the orignal soundtrack to that masterpiece."

Well, just remember that keeping things properly filed and stored is expensive, and a studio only makes a few thousand dollars on an archival release of a film score, so it's not really hard to see how this isn't really a priority. I'm not suggesting the studios are completely mercenary about preservation (some are better than others across the board), but given how much there is to preserve (and I have a friend who is a costume designer who is appalled that so many original costume sketches have been destroyed), it's not really shocking that not everything survives.

Nevertheless, the studios assiduously ensure that they OWN everything connected to their "works-for-hire," whether or not they have any inclination or wherewithal to preserve and maintain said materials.

As far as I remember, tapes for the VCL release were provided by Mr Conti himself.
The full original score release remaining a holy grail for me.
Among the "missing" elements are the synth sessions which were conducted separately form the orchestral sessions.
Bill conti scored the film on a very short notice, following John Barry's departure.

Maybe it's been all the years of listening to that magnificent Conti-LSO re-record on Varese, but after having watched the film again recently, I found the cheesy '80s synths jarring. They really do "screw the pooch" and take the viewer--well, this viewer--out of that era the film otherwise does so well in conveying.

Love the North and South material on that album, too. One of Varese's finest releases.

As someone who usually dislikes synth mixed with orchestra, I think the synth work here are some of the highlights of the score. The music playing after Yeager hit the sound barrier and does the barrel roll is really spine tingling.

The in camera model shots, visual optical effects, sound effects and music are incredible. This is one of my favorite scenes in any film, and one of my favorite score cues.

I just finally got the Varese club Right Stuff and find it's a really weird listen for me. I'm so used to the original release (the one paired with North and South) that the synths, especially, seem truly out of place.

Also, I am reminded of the numerous, um, homages to Holst.

Yeah, the Conti/LSO CD by Varese is one of their finest EVER!
I just decided to rip that CD into ITunes and added it to my IPhone:-)

No need to try and suppress or scare off contrary viewpoints, old sport.
