CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND – 40 ANNIVERSARY:
LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET) LLLCD 1433
Music by John Williams
Limited Edition of 5000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $29.98

La-La Land Records, Sony Music and Columbia Pictures present CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND: 40th ANNIVERSARY REMASTERED LIMITED EDITION, a special 2-CD set featuring a newly restored and remastered presentation of Academy Award-Winning composer John Williams’ (JAWS, STAR WARS, SCHINDLER’S LIST) original motion picture score to the 1977 landmark feature film CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss and Teri Garr. Maestro Williams’ score personifies this classic film’s boundless wonder – searching through, and communicating with, the deep expanses of space as it also explores the unknowable mysteries of the human soul.

This deluxe 2-CD edition, meticulously produced, mixed and mastered by Mike Matessino, in consultation with the composer and director, was inspired by the discovery that Williams had originally planned the soundtrack as a 75-minute double LP. Disc One of this presentation takes its lead from that initial intent, expanding and organizing the score as a grand symphony contained on a single disc. Disc Two offers an equally fresh experience of the score, comprised of discrete versions of cues, alternates and selections not heard on Disc One, plus many of the 1977 album tracks, as well as previously unreleased source music recorded for the film. Matessino’s exclusive liner notes explore this iconic, majestic score, while Jim Titus’ art design handsomely recalls all those joyous feelings generated by one of the greatest science fiction film experiences of all time. This is a limited edition release of 5000 units.

Songwriter/lyricist Bricusse unleashes a musical bounty to complement this charming incarnation of the classic Hugh Lofting titular character and his magic gift of gab with the animals. Bricusse’s iconic work here would generate such famous songs as “I’ve Never Seen Anything Like It,” “Fabulous Places” and the Oscar-Winning “Talk To The Animals.”

This deluxe 2-CD anniversary edition, meticulously produced, restored, mixed and mastered by Mike Matessino, from studio vault elements, in consultation with the composer, showcases a stunningly full ACT I and ACT II score presentation greatly expanded beyond the original Gold-selling 1967 album. This release looks to top Vol. 1. It's got nearly every piece of music I wanted that the first set didn't have, and my preferred picks at that.

I can't thank you enough for these releases, La-La-Land!

Listening to these samples, I don't remember hearing the synth choir textures in "The Muse" at ALL. They must have been dialed down in the episode.

I am so glad you all included Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang. That's what took me over the top and got me to buy this thing on release day, even though I've promised myself to slow down.

(Don't get me wrong, I love the whole schmear. But I've found that despite all odds I just love Vic Fontaine, so very glad to have this in the set.)

Just got my set today and wanted drop a big "THANK YOU!" to LLL and everyone who had a hand in putting this set together! Love the selections and hope it does well enough to warrant at least one more DS9 set (or maybe a final collection picking up odds and ends from TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT). Thanks again!

Indeed, this is another well-rounded collection from the LLL crew! Nice cue selections on the discs, I was really pleased to hear Chattaway's "Tears of the Prophets" score, that's a good one, and I finally have his action music from "Past Prologue" and "The Adversary". From McCarthy, I always wanted that exact cue from "Melora" that was included. plus music from "The Jem'Hadar" and "Blaze of Glory". I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Greg Smith's "Honor Among Thieves", even for a moody, suspenseful score it's pretty compelling. And "Badda-Bing" is of course a super fun standout on the set.

Wow, there is a usage of synth choir in some of the cues!
In the score for The Muse from Paul Baillargeon and in some Chattaway material (which he also did in a couple of Voyager episodes). It surprises me though because I thought the producers where against that sort of thing?
But it is an nice addition to the collection, isn't it?

They greatly dialed it down in "The Muse." You can barely hear the synth elements.
