I feel positively naked, as me and the missus lounge by the pool, being the ONLY ONES who haven't let someone scribble all over our bodies.
No place is sacred. Thighs, calves, necks, boobs!!
NOT a fan.

I agree. Tattos, piercings, both ways girls indicate that don't make smart choices and shouldn't be dated.

I'm sure they're very disappointed that they don't meet your standards.

Justin, you said, "I agree. Tattos, piercings, both ways girls indicate that don't make smart choices and shouldn't be dated. "

If guys have tattoos and piercings, should they be considered "dateable?" Just curious.

Again, not everything in life is about race, sex, or religion.

What kind of a nut lets themselves be deliberately BRANDED? Oh I forgot, as Kev so pointedly remarks, they're all individuals. Who needs a zombie movie?

Tattooing is not branding. Branding is burning, and is a mark of ownership. Tattooing is typically neither.

So you fellas aren't attracted to tattoos. Guess what? The people who got them didn't get them to attract you. And there's a reasonable chance that many of them aren't particularly attracted to you, either.

As for the "all individuals" snark: yeah, they're people. We're social animals. Most of us present very similarly to others in our social groups. Most of us who choose alternatives to the hegemonic culture are still different in ways that situate us among existing alternative cultures and communities. True individuals generally don't get along very well in this world.

I don't mind the smaller ones on the ankle or shoulder. It's when you can measure it by the square foot that it becomes unattractive to my eye. You have to admire the talent of the tattooist, though.

Tattoos are like children: everyone loves theirs, but if they had to do it all over again...they probably wouldn't have had them.

Kev, blame that twat Beckham! smile

It isnt much of a giveaway to see on this thread who has a tat and who doesn't wink

A girl im seeing is covered in them, the outside of both arms and legs. Quite tasteful, tho.
Altho she is limited to wearing plain clothes, anything with a pattern clashes with the tats!

Mastage, the Nazis 'branded' some concentration camp inmates with serial numbers tattooed on the arm.

Kev's original post was to make clear that he and his partner feel like outsiders in a more or less randomly selected group of people at some spot marked X on the globe. What has happened to the planet we knew? It is a serious viewpoint - what is happening to the way people think? Is it getting better or is it actually getting worse? Is the environment less trashed or more trashed than before?

Thanks, TG.

Those are some wise words from Jim.

One interesting aspect about the proliferation of tattoos over a lot of parts of bodies has been in the employment arena. My husband is a retired banker, and banks in our area (and maybe other areas) had very conservative dress codes. Over the few years before he retired, he said that he interviewed very qualified men and women for jobs in this bank, but the dress code said no tattoos could be showing. People hired in banks around here had to wear long sleeved shirts and not show any visible tattoos.

Because of this proliferation, I think dress codes have eased some in the past few years. I notice tellers in banks and people in other jobs now have tats showing.

me, ive never had one. They are a very divisive commitment, arent they?
Some girls love em, some hate em.

I guess seeing this girl has opened my eyes to being unbothered by them.
There are other areas where she excels!

I know. My grandfather was one of those inmates, in fact. But what Kev's talking about has nothing to do with that, unless you suppose that all those people at the pool had been marked by the state or other oppressors rather than choosing to be inked.

Kev's original post was to make clear that he and his partner feel like outsiders in a more or less randomly selected group of people at some spot marked X on the globe. What has happened to the planet we knew? It is a serious viewpoint - what is happening to the way people think? Is it getting better or is it actually getting worse? What does the environment being trashed have to do with whether people choose to get tattoos? What does people being tattooed have to do with "the planet"? I certainly understand concerns about the environment and our relationship with our environment, but somewhere in your chain of thought I'm missing a key link relating any of that to how people choose to express and present themselves.

Anyway. There's probably no point in the last few thousand years where you couldn't find groups of humans where someone without body art or body mods wouldn't be the norm. So maybe on the cultural side it's less about "the planet we knew" changing than about the revelation that the planet we knew wasn't necessarily representative of the planet that was.

There is a worrying side to tattoos. Found this quote: "...Externalisation of Pain. There's an epidemic of self-harm and tattoos in today's world, and the two go together. People with low self-esteem – with a high level of inner pain – are faced with how to deal with that ...feelin and sensing types come to the conclusion: "Get the pain out!" A transfer from inside to outside where they can see it. A beautification of something ugly."
