While sitting down and listening to Mark Mancina's score to Bad Boys I thought I would start a thread discussing action scores from the 80s and 90s. Adventure or Sci-Fi scores like Robin Hood and Independence Day are welcomed in here.

What I wanted to talk about mainly though is that special sound Hans Zimmer and his crew deployed in movies like Crimson Tide, The Rock, Face/Off, Broken Arrow, and Bad Boys, etc. I wish they would go back to doing more scores like these. They are just so conducive to generating energy and emotions. I am a published author that write's action and romance fiction and I can tell you those are the scores I have visited the most while writing my work. Out of the Hans Zimmer bunch though I have to say that Broken Arrow and The Rock are probably my absolute favorites.

Now to leave out Michael Kamen's golden work during these two decades on Die Hard and Lethal Weapon would be a good reason to run me over with a pick up truck (Please don't, I'm still paying medical bills from past injuries). Out of all the Lethal Weapon scores I'm not sure I have a favorite, but maybe the second one. As for Die Hard? Die Hard with a Vengeance has to be up there as my favorite of the three, especially that unearthed cue Ode to Johnny. Holy cow do I get energized each time I hear that track!

And to continue on...Independence Day....Everything about this score from start to finish is just epic. It is one of those scores I listen to from start to finish and never have to hit skip. It's David Arnold at his best and most bombastic. The best track is clearly "Russell's Packin" at the 2:54 mark. I love the epic end credits track as well.

I originally posted this forgetting to add on Indiana Jones...I don't know how. My favorite piece of score music is the Truck Chase scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Everything about the music to all three of the movies just sucks you in to an adventure and pumps you up. John Williams operating at his best.

And then, finally, the Bond scores of the 90s. I'm just going to say it, I love Eric Serra's GoldenEye and I don't care who knows it. Now it's important to mention my favorite track on that score is John Altman's Tank Chase music, but nevertheless I like the score. Tomorrow Never Dies is just full of James Bond goodness.

I still haven't talked about Speed, one of my all time favorite scores. I could go on and on.

Most of the stuff I've mentioned has been released by La La Land Records who tend to cater towards my action music obsession. What action movie scores do you prefer from those two decades? Do you miss any particular styles from that time period?

Don't forget Elfman's BATMAN score. A landmark of that period.

Yes, especially those Church Bells in the finale track! It's so dang epic being followed by the Batman theme.

This is a great post Peter!

The 80s and 90s were exceptional times in film music for which seem to yield endless brilliant action cues and scores from most of the big composers at the time from Goldsmith, especially, to Williams, Horner, Silvestri, Arnold, Elfman and of course Zimmer and his protégés. Brilliant, imaginative, inventive and powerful.

Some of my favourite action scores from that period:

The Rambo Scores
The Die Hards
The Lethal Weapons
Predator
Black Rain
Commando

With probably many more and that isn’t including indivual tracks within scores that aren’t considered action scores!

Too many to choose from. I'd have to think very carefully about this.

While I rarely listen to this kind of music anymore (or to be more specific -- the kind of rambunctious, orchestral action adventure music), this was 'da shit' back in my formative years in the 90s.

...Oh yes, my favourite years for 'Action' scores. DAYS OF THUNDER, THE ROCK, THE PEACEMAKER, CRIMSON TIDE, DROP ZONE, BACKDRAFT....The list goes on and on. Cheers

It's by no means my favorite era, but I will give a "shout out" to Goldsmith's U.S. Marshals.

...and of course the RAMBO scores--minus the lyrics to "It's a Long Road"--are classics of the era.

Oh, and Johnny boy's Indiana Jones stuff isn't bad, either.

With you on the IJ, very influential music! Now I'm interested in US Marshalls (especially given the Jerry roll I've been on of late).

My favorite soundtrack years are from around 75 to 95. I'll add Secret of NIMH to the list. There's some great stuff in other decades too of course.

80s

Lethal Weapon 2
Tango & Cash

90s

Total Recall
RoboCop 2
Terminator 2
The Fugitive
Demolition Man

I'd like to include Goldenthal's Heat, but I'm not sure if it qualifies, since I consider it to be a crime drama more than another action film

Action scores of that era were not really my favourite thing. (Action scores, or rather scores from films we think of as action films, of the 60s and 70s float my boat more.)

But from that era, I like The Living Daylights and Total Recall best.

Cheers

"Raw Deal" (1986)
It hardly ever gets mentioned--cheesy as Hell, but I love it.
Tons of fun.
