I couldn't find previous postings on the subject: in your opinion what is your list of the best most exciting, dramatic and goose bumpy nuggets from the Star Wars soundtracks. NOT big set pieces, but small morsels i.e. Into The Trap motif from ROTJ. No doubt given the scope and size of all the Star Wars scores put together, said list would be quite long and daunting, but what the hell, name your favorites. Another great example: @5:13 of Main Title and Escape from Last Jedi......have at it!

The Empire Strikes Back
'The Asteroid Chase' @ 2:18
After Han says, 'Never tell me the odds,' the Falcon banks and swoops by, right to left, and the strings go soaring! That moment still gives me chills, and it has done so every time I've seen it in concert.

Great topic! My favorite has always been from Empire. The Clash of Lightsabers from 2:36 to 2:60. Goosebumps every time! I also really am enjoying The Battle of Crait 3:45 to 4:00 as well!

Absolutely the first one that came to my mind too.
The whole piece.

Outside of the theme suites, which will always take the cake for me when it comes to STAR WARS music, I really must call out two instance of phenomenal, exciting musicianship with one-off or 'smaller' motifs that really jumped out at me, both incidentally from RETURN OF THE JEDI:

A.) The giddy fanfare first heard when Jabba's sail barge explodes, and then later when the Death Star follows suit. For my money, this is the catchiest and most memorable action scoring of the entire franchise. I can't recall a single note of that famous Asteroid Chase cue, but oh boy, this little exclamatory motif is never far from my mind!

B.) Late in the film when Luke is fighting Vader and jumps from the shadows with a resounding "Nooo!", only to savagely defeat and nearly kill Vader. The low male choir and reverential strings are genius, truly goosebumps-inducing stuff. It takes a moment that could have been scored ominously or bespoke of action/heroics, and instead elevates the moment with mythic, reverent gravitas. Only a musical dramatist of the highest order would approach a moment like that with such an emotionally ambitious bit of scoring, and pull it off with such aplomb.

One from each of the original trilogy films...

A New Hope

The Battle of Yavin

from 1:10-1:50. The X and Y wing fighters begin their attack runs. The Force theme sweeps through in a militaristic fashion as the fighters unleash hell on the Death Star.

The Empire Strikes Back

The Imperial Probe/Aboard The Executor

from 2:45-3:20. The unused(!) music introducing the Imperial/Vader's theme as we see the Star Destroyers moving through space (in all directions, it seems)

Return of the Jedi

Emperor's Throne Room

from 2:22-3:00 after the Emperor says "Your faith in your friends is yours!" the Emperor's theme swells and the strings swirl and the wordless male chorus adds a spooky element to the music.

I have a couple:

1. Mouse Robot/Blasting Off : the moment when we see the star destroyers in pursuit of the Falcon and that incredible loud staccato brass moment. Probably my favorite morsel.

2. Ben's Death/Tie Fighter Attack: the moments leading up to and waiting for the TIE fighters attack.

3. Death Star is in range/"You may fire when ready" - that thunderous timpani.

4) Solo's Carbon freeze - the moment's after Solo's carbon freezing, when they slowly bring him backup. Again, great and thunderous timpani.

5) ROTJ - jumping out of lightspeed and on their initial attack run against DS#2.

I agree with Adam B. about the unused Empire but. It's my favourite bit of music in the entire thing.

Star Wars- Mos Eisley Space Port- "You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy".
Star Wars- Distant shot of the rebel fighters launching into space from the Rebel base.

Empire- Escape from the space slug. Beginning when Han shoots his blaster into the "ground".
Empire- Rescuing Luke from the weather vane. The whole build up of music until the Tie Fighters approach.

Jedi- Rebels preparing their assault on the Death Star 2/Hyper space, and "It's a trap!".
Jedi- Falcon and X-Wing blow up the Death Star 2 generator/The Falcon spitting out of the Death Star 2 just when it explodes.

It's been mentioned, but the part of "Into the Trap" in ROTJ when Ackbar says "May the Force be with us" and the music returns to the cue's repeating figure. Chills. Every. Time.

Also, the reading of the Force theme under Yoda's teaching Luke in EMPIRE ("luminous beings are we, not this crude matter"), right before he lifts the X-wing out of the swamp. It's so kind, gentle and understated - like Yoda himself. It brings a tear to my eye every time.

LOL.
And here I was just trying to dispel Marshall's fears.
That'll learn me!

Anyway, the last bit of the Empire End Credits where the basses and the brass are just blasting while the tympanies are doing a very Zarathustra-type thing--gives me chills.
