LALO SCHIFRIN - THE EARLY YEARS - TEN CLASSIC ALBUMS ON FOUR CDS

Enlightment

Availability date: 01/19/2018

https://www.musicbox-records.com/en/cd-soundtracks/5565-lalo-schifrin-the-early-years.html

Creator of some of the most iconic all-time film scores, Lalo Schifrin built a reputation as one of the most talented composers and arrangers in musical history, earning five Grammy Awards during his career so far. A highly skilled pianist too, Schifrin has worked alongside an eclectic array of musicians from across the jazz spectrum, including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cannonball Adderley, Louis Bellson, Stan Getz and Luiz Bonfa. However, it was while fronting his own bands and conducting his own orchestras that Schifrin truly excelled, with his early albums providing an exciting blend of styles, both traditional and modern. This collection, featuring over five hours of music across four discs, brings together the complete early works of Lalo Schifrin as band leader, from his debut album to the point at which he left behind the groups and orchestras to compose full time for the worlds of film and TV. Faithfully tracking the development of the great man's music across this crucial era, this collection will prove the perfect introduction to the work of a master writer, arranger and musician, as well as a welcome reminder of his earliest sounds.

Excellent! I've already got some of these, but I've always wanted CDs of New Fantasy and those albums with Louis Bellson and Bob Brookmeyer.

Seems to be a great set although some albums like BOSSA NOVA, LALO BRILLIANCE or PIANO, STRINGS AND BOSSA NOVA are repeated over and over. I already have some of them twice since I bought a previous two CD release entitled THE BOSSA NOVA & LATIN ALBUMS (Malanga Music). A pity they didn't include Lalo's album with Cal Tjader instead. Or did they? They indeed announce 10 albums and feature only 8 covers.
Still, the price being rather attractive for a 4 CD box, I think I'll go for it.

You're talking about the great album 'Several Shades Of Jade'; well, in fact this album is not properly a work of Schifrin, but a collaboration (arrangements), for the album of Cal Tjader.

As for this collection, there are actually 10 albums; the covers of the 2 albums that were not exposed on the cover of this CD are: 'Piano EspaƱol' (1959) & 'Gone With The Wave' (1965):

GONE WITH THE WAVE, huh? Well that gives a clue as to this box set's sources. GONE WITH THE WAVE was released by FSM in 2006. But because the master LP tape was missing, they had use a stereo 1/4" master tape, which may have itself been made from an LP in the late 1960s.

2 great Lalo Schifrin albums still not on CD:

1) Paul Horn: Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts. RCA. Schifrin won a Grammy for jazz composition for this ecclesiastical/jazz blend for flutist/alto saxist Paul Horn. Schifrin redid this in the nineties with Tom Scott, but that original can't be beat.

2) Murderer's Row. Just because I like it.

It appears so, although I see it says "When sold by Amazon.com, this product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media", which is a turn-off. And one of the reviewers complains "Great album but the download ...seemed to be a copy of an analog recording with tics and pops. I returned the download for a refund."

That's worrisome if true. I hope it doesn't mean the LP master has gone missing.

Paul Horn & Lalo reunited for "Dream Machine" in 1978.
I'd like having that on Cd as well.

This appears to be grey market, Euro release taking advantage of 50 year copyright rules. Be wary of the source materials.

I bought this box and alas confirm most of it is ripped off vinyle source. The sound quality is therefore so so on many tracks. A pity the producers didn't bother trying to get the original recording tapes. I indeed would not mind paying a few extra bucks for this anthology to get a better product.
