Though I think the Academy is mostly a bad joke, it does say something that the Omen won out over both Obsession and Taxi Driver by Bernard. Especially given the fact that was the year the latter died.
Doesn’t it say that Herrmann lost out because his vote was split
As much as I like Taxi Driver in particular, and can appreciate Obsession, I’d say that The Omen was just about deserving of the win although Outlaw Josey Wales is my personal favourite from that year. Maybe the opening theme being drawn from a Civil War song (see also Glory) counted against Jerry. It was a strong year, with Lalo being the other nominee.
Well Obsession was mostly an homage to Bernard's past scores, and a magically put together one at that imo.
Taxi Driver was Bernard pushing into new territories, changing what could be conceived as noir into a very different and "70s" thing.
Both are sensational imo.
So if only one of them had been nominated, Obsession as a sort of lifetime retrospective or Taxi Driver for pushing the boundaries, which one of them have won that year?
