I'm not a Star Trek fan but i have seen all the films and probably half of Next Gen and only bits of the other ones.

I saw episodes of the original series as a little kid but mostly remember being a bit frightened of some scary faces in it. So i was either very young or very cowardly, or a bit of both. Anyhow before Christmas i started watching a few episodes of TOS and have since resumed.

It's actually really entertaining. Every episode kicks off straight away into an adventure. There's tons of action - i had it in my head they just stood around talking a lot then reversed phasers and that solved everything. The fight scenes range from not great (Gorn) to some genuinely decent fight choreography that looks like it hurts. There's some interesting camerawork in here too. Like the Mirror Universe episode where Shatner walks out of a lift and gets punched in the face.

The music is really good. It adds so much. Once again i hadn't realised it was so sweeping, thrilling and often quite memorable.

I even like the stylized alien landscape sets and the lush colour throughout the wardrobes. I hadn't realised everything was so colourful.

Shatner has tons of presence, Nimoy is fantastic, and Bones is great too. I like how Bones was portrayed in the JJ Abrams films, Karl Urban got him bang on it seems.

Starting the second series it's good to see how youthful and energetic Chekov was, he's a fun character. It's also fun seeing people like Reggie Nalder, David Soul, the barber from High Plains Drifter, Joan Collins pop up too.

I can see why people liked it so much when it first came out and why it endured. Good entertaining fun.

1960s Trek is a thick, juicy steak. Anything else calling itself "Star Trek" is strictly soy.

TOS season 3 has some seriously crazy camerawork.

The Kirk/Spock movies are good, too, but I wish they had not depended so much on the tv series (Klingons, time travel, etc.) for the movie plots and had used the movies to truly introduce new life forms, etc. that hadn't been seen before.

Are you watching the originals or the versions with the upgraded digital effects? There's some significant improvements in the matte paintings, and far more interesting shots of the Enterprise.

I could go on a crapload about how I love the show over the years, but it's all been said before--and better, by people more eloquent than I.
Put it this way--it's comfort food for my brain.

I grew up with Trek's original FX, as most of did I'm sure. I've got to say to hell with nostalgia. The new effects are far FAR better and well integrated. They help the show enormously in these modern times.

I've always supported keeping the original versions available to the public. I really want the theatrical versions of the Star Wars original trilogy. (I think all the changes Lucas made were for the worse)

But, when it comes to Star Trek TOS (and even BSG TOS), I'm okay with updating the effects. Because they just didn't have the time and budget to provide proper visuals outside of say The Doomsday Machine for the entire run of the series. All we got for 90 episodes where the same four or so shots of the Enterprise. Pretty redundant and boring.

As a kid, TNG was my favorite show but as I've gotten older TOS and DS9 are what do it for me. I actually watched some episodes last night.

It's not about nostalgia. New effects look like video games and clash with the old show's "look" and storyline. I find them LESS well integrated. It's the equivalent of re-recording the music with synthesizers and solos. I wish they had simply improved the old effects, not replaced them, since I agree they need some help.

But the new clean prints of the live action material would clash with the optically processed (and over-processed) original FX shots (those processes are "baked in" and probably impossible to improve) and they'd stick out like a sore thumb. At the very least, the new CGI FX blend well with the clean 35mm material. But who knows - maybe recreated physical models would have looked better. Expensive though.

Yah, i'm watching the versions with newer effects for sure. They're not too advanced that they pull me out of it but i'd like to see the original shots just to see them. Some of the matte paintings or whatever they are in some backgrounds look like they might have been new too but not sure. They're in keeping with the rest of it just enough for me.

They couldn't. The amount of work required for the original space FX (layers ontop of layers ontop of layers) had degraded that footage so it would be unusable in remasters. Theres actually stuff in the "live action" parts of the remastered episodes they couldn't update for the same reason (the castle on the hill in Errand of Mercy comes to mind).

The only replaced effect I thought was interesting and effective was a shot of the Constellation getting hit by a random bit of debris in "Doomsday Machine." It was nice to see something that's in the back of your mind - what happens when your deflectors dont work. Plus it was relatively static and doesnt overpower the drama which is what the new effects often do (for me, at least). I appreciated the interesting shots of the Galileo at the end of "Galileo 7" although they started to get distracting - arty for the sake of it, rather than augmenting the drama.

I think real models might have helped, with some added grain to give it a film look. NextGen used models but looked abit video gamey (though not as unconvincing as the CGI for TOS). THE CAGE improvements looked good, although they were more terrestrial, not outer space effects.

Speaking of that doomsday device, I recall seeing the redux and laughing me arse off when it starts to sink DOWNWARD after it's dead.
It still makes me laugh.

If they'd held the shot a little longer we'd have seen it hit the floor of the universe... and possibly roll a bit.

Only a few episodes with the new CGI footage ("new" even though they're over 10 years old now) work for me.

"Tomorrow Is Yesterday" hit it out of the park. The Enterprise in Earth's atmosphere looks amazing and the slingshot effect actually makes sense now.

"Space Seed" looks very nice and "Balance of Terror" nailed the Romulan ship.

Some episodes miss the mark. "The Doomsday Machine" has a few wrong-headed changes that don't make any sense (an example of not paying attention to the script of the finished episode before making new FX), and some episodes relaced dynamic shots with cutting edge FX, but more slack pacing. For the most part, I prefer the originals ("Where No Man Has Gone Before" still holds up VERY well).

And no, the old effects don't stick out, they look like they were done in the same era as the live action footage. They don't suffer from Babylon 5 syndrome. Everyone's mileage varies, but I'm just as happy the original FX are still available on the blu-ray sets.

I'm into season 3 and may have watched too many too quickly. I'm finding a few wpisodes have too little content to fill the time. And there's a few bad episodes and one absolutely awful one that involves creepy children who can control people. Nice idea but I thought it was executed badly, repetetive and just a chore to watch. Also it feels more like they keep finding civilizations based on available wardrobes, ancient Romans, Greeks, Nazis (though that episode was pretty great). Cracking music constantly though. Kirk's spacesuit when he fades in and out of reality isn't the best but made me laugh too.

You're referring to And the Children Shall Lead. Yes, that's one of the two worst episodes. Avoid The Way To Eden also. Just embarrassing.

Season 3 does have a few outstanding episodes, though.

The Enterprise Incident
The Tholian Web
Elaan of Troyius (with a great score by Steiner)

Have fun watching!

TOS was always a mixed bag of great, good, and terrible. Kinda like how Shatner's physique went from the beginning of each season until the end. big grin

By the third season Roddenberry was out and the studio got more silly with the stories as it was trying to compete with LIS which was kicking their butts in the ratings.
