Maestro Jones drops these quotes in an interview filled with great quotes:

Are you as down on the state of film scoring as you are on pop?
"It’s not good. Everybody’s lazy. Alexandre Desplat — he’s good. He’s my brother. He was influenced by my scores."

Again, when you say film composers are lazy, what does that mean, exactly, in this context?
"It means they’re not going back and listening to what Bernard Herrmann did."

. . .

You talk so often about your ups — I’m wondering if maybe you can talk about one of your downs.
What happened was that I was a producer on The Color Purple. Spielberg and me are still great friends, man. He’s a great fucking guy. I loved working with him.

Yep, but what happened on The Color Purple that caused your breakdown?
What happened was that I was a producer on that movie and everybody went on vacation after we finished filming — everybody except me. I had to stay home and write an hour and 55 minutes of music for the movie. I was so fucking tired from doing that, I couldn’t see. I put too much on my plate and it took its toll. You learn from your mistakes and I learned I couldn’t do that again.

And/or Alfred Newman, Rozsa, Goldsmith, Williams....

I thought his comments on the Beatles were made out of jealousy. The Beatles weren't exactly Cream when it came to musicianship, but what they did will endure at least as long as anything Jones was ever part of. And that's coming from an admirer of Jones.

Or "filtered" through alcohol.

The whole interview is a fantastic read and worth your time. I'm sure all the Bernard Herrmann fans wholeheartedly agree with the man. big grin

Last line of the interview -

"I stopped drinking two years ago and I feel like I’m 19 years old. I’ve never been so creative. I can’t tell you, man — what a life!"

I cracked up at this hilarious line: "Bono makes me stay at his castle because Ireland is so racist."

That was Carole King and Gerry Goffin.

I was more blown away by his revelation that Marlon Brando slept with John Williams and Bernard Herrmann while Richard Pryor and Alexandre Desplat made out in the other room. I was like, how is that even possible?!

The whole interview smelled a bit of oncoming dementia to me, and rather different from what I've seen of him in the past (WTF was up with that JFK quip?). But then again, I have no idea what Jones is like in private.

hey sarge.
I like Jones. And i like his candid views. And blunt speaking. And even his swearing.
A proper personality.
Quincy you da man!
I expect two hours in his company would be like hoovering up gold dust.
What stories he must have.

LOL! big grin

But the Brando/Pryor relationship has been confirmed by Pryor's widow, so Q wasn't just making shit up.

Was it?! Oh man, my mistake. Legit thought it was him; its one of the few QJ albums I own but I love the heck out of it.

interesting comments ... but why does he have to swear all the time I would have thought he was well educated and beyond all that nonsense ......I have interviewed many leading film composers past and present and not one ventured into such awful language...

I was wondering about that too. A quick stride down O'Connell Street says cosmo triple plus.

Maybe Bono just wants to hog him to himself.

It's a good interview, deep when it matters and tongue-in-cheek too. This man studied under Boulanger and is broad.
