It's an excellent score, and our very own Doug Adams offers some knowledge in this interview here:

Another earlier piece on the same site for the curious:

Me own personal favourite is the QUARTET 2-cd of "BORA BORA" by Piero Piccioni and Les Baxter! I have always liked Baxter's score since it was first released, and now I have Piccioni's score, as well! They are just the right music to listen to when you are in a bit of a mood to visit the south seas....

Would THE DEADLY AFFAIR by Q qualify?
Lotsa cool bossa-nova stylings!

HAVANA by Grusin is fueled by my beloved Afro-Cuban jazz!

No Martin Denny albums? He was a big contributor to the exotica sound. Or is he too "lounge" style to count? Would the Newman/Darby Magic Islands and Port of Paradise count or are they too lush?

Portions of George Duning's DEVIL AT 4 O'CLOCK would qualify as exotica.

Bossa in and of itself is not exotica, but I love bossa, and there are definitely some exotica elements across the score in various places.

Never heard it. Some Afro-Cuban music can have exotica elements, especially some of The Great Chico O'Farrill's arrangements.

Of course! Les Baxter and Martin Denny codified most of the exotica elements!

Never on LP, but released on a Varese Sarabande Club CD, is what I consider as a granddaddy of cinema exotica: Bird of Paradise by Daniele Amfitheatrof.

Amfitheatrof's dense orchestrations and detailed compositions are similar to the highly chromatic concert works by the likes of Szymanowski, Scriabin, Raitio, etc.

This has potential!

One month since my last post - and still no further feedback from OnyaBirri?

Recently, my mind thought about Florent Schmitt's music for the 1925 silent film Salammbô.

Never saw or heard it. I will search the classical budget bin for this one!

"Gwenny Lee" from George Duning's "World of Susie Wong" is most certainly exotica!

This recording was rereleased by RCA in 2008. It's wonderful music, but I kind of doubt that it'll conform with your notion of exotica. But maybe it will.

It's currently available in an excellent (and inexpensive) box set called "Masterworks Of The Late 19th Century In France" along with compositions by Debussy, Roussel, Bizet, Bruneau, Fauré, Franck, Massenet, and Saint-Saëns. Jacques Mercier conducts the Orchestre National d'Ile de France.

Thanks. I would consider some music by Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky to generally qualify as "exotica" - all three were big influences on Les Baxter - so it may fit the bill. I will see if it is on the intertubes.

Did some needle drops on Salammbô. Some nice passages. Worth exploring, but not what I would classify as exotica, at least based on my needle drops.

Now drinking a Shrunken Skull while listening to "Exotic Island" by the Surfmen on the Somerset label. This album was later reissued under the name "Tradewind Romance," with the artist credited as the South Seas Serenaders.

The whole album is killer, but here is the money cut:

Shrunken Skull:

1 part fresh lime
I part grenadine
1 part Demerara rum
1 part Puerto Rican gold rum.

Shake in a shaker with ice. Pour into a stylish glass filled with ice. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Using pebble ice from the Sonic drive-through. Nothing beats it in tiki drinks.

I am using a high-end grenadine (Jack Rudy) with real pomegranate and cane sugar. No corn syrup or food dye.

Happy Friday.

Still drinking the Shrunken Skull, but I have moved on to "Kapu" by Milt Raskin on the infamous Crown Records. This album was also reissued under the titles "Exotic Percussion" and "Exotic Sounds of Hawaii" with different cover art and the tracks reshuffled.

As with my previous selection, the whole album is top-shelf, but here is the money cut, the haunting and seductive "Maika."

I moved on to jazz, so I won't post about the jazz details in an exotica thread, but I will mention that after the Shrunken Skulls, I mixed a couple of Don the Beachcomber maitais:

In your shaker, pour 1 ounce each fresh lime juice, Rhum Clément VSOP Martinique rum, and Appleton Estate Extra dark Jamaican rum; 1/2 ounce orange Curacao; 1/2 ounce Latitude 29 Formula Orgeat; and 1/4 ounce sugar syrup.

Shake well. Pour in a stylish glass over crushed ice.

Enjoy life!
