I've really been getting into the clips from maestro Jerry Goldsmith's "Coma", but see three CD choices. The Coma/Westworld and /Logan's Run twofers interest me because I don't own any of those scores in any form. I wonder about completeness regarding those two releases (and sound, of course), which also goes for the original (and significantly less expensive) OS release. Or are we just waiting for La La Land or Varese to shoot us new editions? Any help is as always hugely appreciated, I can always depend on FSM for great input.

The FSM edition with Coma /Westworld/ The Carey Treatment is the way to go. The complete score and the best sound. The usual superb packaging from FSM. I had a feeling that was the keeper.

I like both versions - the original album mix and the complete score. Call me crazy!

In this case, I say go with the album version first. It is readily available and cheap. If you can't get enough Coma music, trade up for the expanded version and unload the album version. It's true, the original version isn't hard on the pocketbook at all. I really really like this score...it seems somehow (pleasingly) different to so much of his other music. Like he was trying for a more personal take on suspense.

COMA is a great score, one of my own personal Goldsmith favorites and one of the scores that made me a huge admirer of this composer in the first place. The FSM release contains the entire score as it is in the movie, I don't know the OST edit. I've seen COMA back in the 1980s several times just for the music (could not find the soundtrack back then). The movie is also interestingly spotted: the first half of the movie is practically score free (under"scoring" the clean, realistic hospital atmosphere), the second half is almost wall-to-wall scored with non-stop suspense music (when the movie becomes a science fiction thriller).

Back again eh? Can't resist muddying the waters more here...if you can get it cheap, grab the original album, why not. It's a good program and is just missing one important thing (see below). It's "true" stereo, where the FSM is one of a handful of recreated stereo from mono discrete mixes type thing. The notes explain it better than I can, it sounds fine, just a disclaimer, if your an audiophile. It's a tough listen I grew to love over time, and as usual FSM has the edge for 2 reasons. Roy Budd's terrific, funky- jazzy Carey Treatment (hey another guy you gotta check into WA!!), and just two words for COMA.....Illegal Parking. I hate Westworld, sorry, it's all tedious muzak & source cues, but the Buds makes up for it. Get the appetizer, if your still hungry, main course that FSM, miss! -Sean

"The Gunslinger" alone makes Westworld a worthy inclusion.

Then I'll have to play that track right now, yes? I swear I've tried with that score, even with love of library, muzak some source music's, this was a rare thumbs down. If it's good for the Rutherford, maybe my impressions were wrong? The muzak/source is (deliberately?) annoying, but the actual underscore is interesting!

Of the non-FSM releases, Bay Cities has the best sound. And I love the album presentation.

Oh, that's right, I forgot we moved the non-Goldsmith track and the disco Coma theme to the end. What a fine decision that was, and if it annoyed you, Spymaster, then it was REALLY a good decision.
