Over at the Film Music Group on Facebook, Gaetano Malaponti has been very busy. He has just completed the the soundtrack to the 1966 British sci-fi film, Island of Terror. This film stars Peter Cushing and Edward Judd and directed by Hammer director, Terence Fisher. The music score is by Malcolm Lockyer . . . .not what I would call a house hold name. But this is a real fun score that Gaetano has talked about doing for a long time. The interesting thing is that he had no cue sheets. He did the entire 36 minute score by ear. . . a masterful achievement, not only because he did it but because it really sounds terrific. Over a year ago he did the same thing for the Hammer Film, The Abominable Snowman by Humphrey Searle. Of course these; including Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Dracula Has Risen From the Grave, Dracula Prince of Darkness were done in complete form with cues via midi. Many people have a stigma about music being done by midi. The 1990s sound of midi come to mind and many people don't want to be bothered. As moderator for the group I am asking one and all to give some of these a try. They sound absolutely fantastic. It isn't as if they are being played on a Hammond organ. They are beautifully notated and orchestrated. Gaetano reconstructed the main title from Horror of Dracula and 2 cues from Curse of Frankenstein when those cues were missing from James Bernard's library of cues so generously lent to us by David Huckvalke. Also Ray Faiola was so kind to lend us the complete score to Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. The bottom line is that no one is recording these scores. Yes . . . Horror of Dracula and Curse of Frankenstein are miraculously being recorded by Tadlow. James Fitzpatrick came to the Film Music Midi Group because he knew we had James Bernard's cue sheets and obviously liked what he heard. We are asking all lovers of these wonderful scores t please sample a preview of the new Island of Terror on YouTube. Here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3EXmEYojEc If you like what you here you can go to The Film Music Midi Group and go onto Gae's website and make a small donation for this and any of the above gems I have mentioned. I am not making this into a sales pitch. He has done these projects by himself and once in a while with help from another wonderful musician, Aleksandar Popovic. At first these were just posted on YouTube - he is not looking to make this into a business but as a labor of love. As Gaetanos says "A 100 people chipping in and paying a few pounds for a midi recording/reconstruction of an unreleased score that will never see the light of day? It certainly wouldn't cover the labour costs involved but it would be a start and show that there is some interest at least to keep these going." So please just check out the new preview for Island of Terror and judge for yourselves. I have always wanted James Bernard's score for Dracula Has Risen From the Grave . . . by orchestra . . .of course . . . .but the midi version sounds just great. I am sorry if this sounds kike a sales pitch. . . but we are just a few guys from Wales, Serbia and New York who are just trying to release music that for the most part would never see the light of day!!!
