I feel like one of these will be a Fellini score by Nino Rota. Of the Oscar-winning Fellini films, Rota's "La Strada" is in most need of a remastering and re-release, if better materials are available now. It was previously released on CD in the 1990s and the sound is terrible (luckily it was paired with "Nights of Cabiria," which has good sound and I believe was complete [or close to it], so the CD wasn't a complete bust).

The score for "8 1/2" has always needed an expansion - at least two essential cues are entirely missing from the CAM album, and several cues are truncated on the album. And it's possible that an expansion of "8 1/2" would include a wealth of alternate/unused cues, similar to "La Dolce Vita."

Also on the subject of Nino Rota and Oscars, I wonder if Quartet was able to pull off liscensing "The Godfather" scores? If so, then that will be a huge deal, particularly for the first score, which is missing some great cues and the sound quality has always left a lot to be desired.

Yet another Rota possibility is a re-release/remaster/expansion of the "Romeo and Juliet" OST.

I think Francis Lai's "Love Story" would benefit greatly from remastering, and I believe it's been out of print for many years. A great score.

"Otto e Mezzo" and "Amacord" are CAM/Sugar so the expanded treatment seems likely, though I worry they may want to wait for a "Christmas Special" again. "La Strada" and "Nights of Cabiria" were released by Intermezzo from what must have been the best available tapes, and both were produced by Dino De Laurentiis. Even if better master tapes somehow were found which we have no reason to believe, Quartet haven't yet been allowed to release De Laurentiis productions, so I think it is easy to rule out these two.

Another interesting option would be La Nuit Américaine by Georges Delerue.

a re-release/remaster/expansion of morricones "the mission" soundtrack would be a dream come true!

Slint,

Interesting, I didn't know about how hard it has been to release scores from Dino De Laurentiis productions. A good portion of the "La Strada" half of that Intermezzo CD is taken directly from a VHS tape of the film, and needless to say those tracks sound even worse than the cues that come from the recording. It would be great if the rights issues were worked out and better-sounding tapes of "La Strada" surfaced.

I don't believe there is very much additional music in "Amarcord" that isn't on the CAM CD, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of alternates. It's also a great score, so I'd be interested in what a Quartet release would look like, but I think "8 1/2" is a higher priority.

Regarding Delerue's "Day for Night," I believe there is only about 10-15 minutes of music in the film, unless I'm mistaken, and I thought most or all of it ended up on the 2004 Universal France CD "Le France Cinéma De François Truffaut."

Thanks for the info. I guess it wasn't Delerue style to have many alternates or unused music.

Another title I thought of that might fit is "Darling" (1965) by John Dankworth. The film was nominated for five Oscars, and won three. An excellent film and score.

Also hoping for some John Barry in this batch.

I hope you're right about Rota, but I suspect it's a little soon for another Fellini. Please prove me wrong, Quartet!

I believe the remaining Fellini/Rotas that CAM released are IL BIDONE, 8 1/2, GIULIETTA DEGLI SPIRITI, CLOWNS, AMARCORD, CASANOVA, and ORCHESTRA REHEARSAL. My guess is that they would prioritize 8 1/2 or GIULIETTA (my personal favorite), but I'd gladly buy any of them.

I believe the CAM CD of "Il Bidone" is the complete score, or damn close. Same for "Juliet of the Spirits" (I think the only thing missing from the CAM CD of this is a variation of The Charleston).

The expanded CAM CD of "Casanova" has a lot of music that isn't in the film, and the film has a lot of music that isn't on the expanded CAM CD. I'm guessing that score must have a ton of alternates in addition to the film tracks. This is my favorite Rota score and I would love to see a definitive release.

The CAM albums of "The Clowns" and "Orchestra Rehearsal" are littered with dialogue, so new releases of those would be most welcome.

Given the Oscar theme of this Quartet batch (and "La Strada" & "Nights of Cabiria" being unlikely due to being Dino De Laurentiis productions) I have to imagine that "8 1/2" is the most likely possibility out of the Fellini films. It was nominated for five Oscars and won two, including Best Foreign Language Film.

Not a Fellini/Rota score, but I am also feeling that one of these might be Rota's "The Godfather" too.

I'm horrible at guessing these, but do love reading what people are thinking of. I'm sure it will be another group of great releases smile

I am looking for La Strada and Love Story in remastered/expanded form.

Love Story is doubtful. And actually, I don't think there is anything in the film that wasn't on the original album.

I got two Christmas releases from Quartet, do not know if I am getting any of these right now.
But anyway, blanket endorsement of Quartet, they do top quality work, the liner notes and the CD's are really excellent.

Well now we know. And what a glorious, sumptuous bouquet of roses it is. Shore, Rota, Delerue, Lai. The world is a better place with Quartet Records in it.

It's incredible that they're releasing "Love Story." I've always thought it could sound better, and now we have all of the material recorded for the movie and the original album.

I was proven wrong too, because even though I love the film & have seen it many times I didn't realize there was 50 minutes of score in "Amarcord" (it has been several years since I last watched it, though). With 30 minutes of alternates we're getting 80 minutes of "Amarcord," which is astonishing.

You can count of a number of those older foreign films having a wealth of alternates.

Something I had secretly hoped for was Hateful Eight...expanded and with all the awful movie sound clips erased from it.

I'm a big fan of that score, but putting the dialogue on the CD was such a terrible idea; it's as though Tarantino just HAD to insinuate himself somewhere on that CD.

There's GOTTA be a reissue someday of it...(praying).
