I love his unreleased music for Edge of Darkness. The last cue is gorgeous and would have elevated the film dramatically. Such a poignant cue. I'd heard the Corigliano before I saw the film so Shore's music had absolutely no impact on me and in most cases, I would superimpose Corigliano's music under it.
His concert works are also fantastic. Great composer.

Yeah, I am really anxious to hear it. Its on my want list for trade.

Terrific composer. Edge of Darkness is a masterwork.
As far as his concert music goes, I'm partial to his piano concerto and Circus Maximus. It's not easy music but it rewards careful and repeated listening.
Great composer. I have all his film scores on CD I also have a classical collection (that Paul recommended in another thread). I keep meaning to pick up a copy of Circus Maximus. Think I will go on a JC binge this weekend in his honour.
John Corigliano is eighty! Yikes! I interviewed him after Altered States, which was around the time of this Oboe Concerto album cover photo. It gave him the aura of a young Greek god. Where have the years gone?
It's a pity that he's had so few cinema opportunities since then. Really only one of them, The Red Violin, was fully realized. At least that score has received its due in awards and recyclings.
Try Revolution, the Hugh Hudson film with Al Pacino.
Not sure I would like this, based on the cover art.
The film does not have the best reputation. The score however is unimpeachable. I can't recommend it enough! Very eclectic, with a beautiful theme for solo flute, a wonderful Mendelssohn-like fox hunt cue and some effective moments that recall the modernism of Altered States (and no fife and drum music!).
If you like Altered States, I also recommend his Clarinet Concerto (which is what got him hired to score Altered States)...

Well, you understand what I mean, right? The cover is half of the listening experience. Would Rubber Soul be as good of an album if the cover showed an obese guy drinking water from a garden hose?
He accepted REVOLUTION and EDGE OF DARKNESS. The one was butchered and the other rejected. Can't blame him for being sour on the medium. Incidentally "sourness" can work in two directions. I recall (was it in this forum or some other?) that many "soundtrack" fans groused at Corigliano's Oscar win because they felt a "classical" composer was being wrongly honored over one of their own.
The CD Paul recommended to me in another thread was Creations & Other Works. It's a collection of shorter overtures and preludes and fanfares, culminating in the title piece, with narration, in the manner of Christus Apollo and sounding almost Leonard Rosenman-like at times. It's also quite apt for this occasion as one piece is a variation of the Happy Birthday tune. Very good stuff and I will have to attack his film scores (all 4 of them) in work this week.
