In reality, Pleasence was a radio operator on a RAF Lancaster bomber. RAF crewmen sometimes carried condoms to replace frozen microphone diaphragms on their oxygen masks. When Pleasence was captured after his Lancaster was shot down, the German officer found the condoms in his pocket and said, "You won't be needing these where you are going." Pleasence was tortured in POW camp Stalag Luft I.

Pleasence played the villain Dr. Michaels in FANTASTIC VOYAGE which also starred Stephen Boyd and Raquel Welch.

Pleasence was the first actor to be seen as Ernst Stavro Blofeld in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE which starred Sean Connery.

Pleasence played Dr. Loomis in John Carpenter's classic HALLOWEEN.

Pleasence reunited with Carpenter for ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK which starred Kurt Russell.

Yup, Donald Pleasence was the real thing. Apparently while filming, Pleasence did try to tell the director where he was going wrong with details about a POW camp, but he said they didn't want to know, so he just shut up & got on with it.

In the Kino thread over at Blu-ray.com, someone asks if The Great Escape is getting the 4K treatment for it's 55 year anniversary (& I'm really not in love with the look of the present Blu-ray), anyway, an interesting answer from Kino:

"It's not with Kino, but has been licenced to a label (one of Criterion, Arrow or Shout)".

It's thought that's it's Criterion.

Donald Pleasence also had a major role in yet another John Carpenter movie, Prince of Darkness.

John Carpenter loved Donald Pleasence & cast him as much as possible (Pleasence was supposed to be in The Thing, but a scheduling conflict prevented that). The feeling was mutual, Pleasence described Carpenter as the best director he ever worked with.
