Can somebody tell me which C.D. version of Richard Band's score for "From Beyond" (Intrada or La La Land) has the best liner notes?

Liner notes? What are they?

They're linear notes, of course.

I know that drives one or two people here crazy, so I couldn't resist. Can't recall who they are though.

LLL has a 5 page Randall Larson essay and if you're familiar with his work, it is in line with his standard. I like Randall, so it's good, just not super intensive, at least as much space he was given. A paragraph each by Stuart Gordon & Richard Band, along with some cool photos round it out.

Intrada has a 14 page text by Daniel Schweiger, including Doug Fair's always great tech talk, along with more photos & cue assembly. See above, I like both of these guys writings as well. This is more intensive & has track by track coverage along with filmmaker quotes.

I keep both because the Intrada has a VERY weird mix I'm not used to. This score was a gateway piece for me, cassette for Christmas back in '86, and nothing has replicated that version yet. It's not just previously unheard lines in the Intrada it is.....indescribable for me yet.

I'd recommend both if your an uber-FB fan.

So there ;-)
Sean

Oh as for the comedians-in-training I blame posting via phone (hi...) for damnable spell check correct. I have to edit mine 20 times, so linear liner, bah!

I LOVE me some Intrada but completely agree about the mix, and will go one step further to say I actually hate the new mix a lot. The orchestra sound tiny, incredibly dry, cramped and flat, and the electronics are mixed way too 'brightly' over the strings. For sound quality, the La La Land is the way to go ANY day. The music has an appropriately wet concert hall reverb that Lovecraftian scoring of this type truly begs for - it sounds cavernous and vast in a really effective and distinct way that the character of the music benefitted from hugely. Anyone hearing the score for the first time via the Intrada has no idea what they're missing out on.

Their release of Band's wonderful GHOST WARRIOR from ten years ago suffered the same issue - the suite on Band's earlier promo sounded so much fuller and richer than the complete score on CD, almost as though it came from a totally different recording venue with a totally different (and smaller) orchestra...

Well said Bobbengan!
I know Intrada is probably composer intended mix, from different sources, but compared to Enigma & LLL, its very.....different.
Some of the sequencing is weird too. I think there is an insert in the main sequence , that bouncy DX-7 theme 'We Were Creatures', which doesn't belong there? I put the few away so I'll recheck later.
I appreciate another look at any score, and we can all make 500 mixes & versions of these things....not giving up, but....get both.
