I apologise that it's a bit cheeky to post this kind of problem to FSM, but having spent a good while trawling various Mac/iPhone/iTunes message boards, I cannot find anyone else reporting a similar problem (although my ability to search for this issue may simply be impaired...) so thought some technically minded FSM bod might be able to assist me.

I have an 128Gb iPhone 6 (software up to date, MacOs Sierra) which I sync to my Mac desktop using the most up to date version of iTunes (12.7.2.58). However, as I've had the issue for the past year, which suggest it's not an iTunes/iPhone software version specific issue. To maximise the amount of music on my iPhone, I have iTunes set to convert higher bit rate files to 128 kps (but issue still occurs when I tried 192 kps) when they copy to my iPhone. I don't have any problems with AAC or Apple Lossless files, but for mp3 files (either from Amazon or other online mp3 stores when I'm not minded to buy a CD), one of the following happens when the mp3 files are copied to my iPhone:

1. They are fine! Tracks play as expected and there is no conversion error.
2. Any track over 1 minute 15 seconds is shortened to 1 minute 15 seconds long (this is reflected in the track length displayed on my phone while the track plays, as well as in the total length of the album... i.e. if an album has 10 tracks, it'll be about 12 minutes long in total as all the tracks over that length are shortened).
3. The tracks appear to be the correct length on my phone when they play and in the total length of the album but when the track is playing and gets to 1 minute 15 seconds, it starts playing the next track, although it appears that the original track is still playing, i.e. it doesn't skip to the next track in the display, just in the audio.

I should note that the tracks appear fine in iTunes itself and play to their full length without any problem. I cannot see any obvious correlation in the way the mp3 is encoded, the source of the track (i.e. some albums downloaded from Amazon are affected, some are not), the bit rate (usually 320 kps, but sometimes 250 kps or VBR) or the format of the mp3 (mostly seem to be MPEG-1, Layer 3).

I have a (clumsy) workaround whereby I convert all of the mp3 tracks into Apple Lossless using Max and then re-import them into iTunes. I tried converting affected mp3's in iTunes into Lossless using iTunes' own coding and ended up with any track over 1 minute 15 seconds being shortened. Tracks converted using Max import fine into iTunes and are similarly fine on my phone. Given the amount of music I have, this isn't really an option I want to go down!

In terms of things I have tried (that didn't work):

1. Deleting all the music from my phone and re-uploading it.
2. Completely wiping my phone and restoring from backup and re-uploading all of the music.

I have not attempted to wipe my phone and re-import the music without restoring my phone (perhaps understandably, I don't really want to lose all of my data!). Aside from utterly lousy battery life, my phone is generally fine. While I have a lot of music in my iTunes library, I am selective about what is on my phone so there is a good 20 Gb of free space on my phone so it's not a storage issue.

So... anyone had this? If so, what (if anything) can be done about it?! Happy to be pointed towards a thread if that's easier (and apologies again if I didn't look hard enough!) but any suggestions gratefully received! Cheers, Tom.

Appreicate it's a bit of an esoteric and involved query for a film music forum, but it was more on the off chance that someone else had the issue or an Apple wizard whose curiosity might be piqued by the issue. I have tried asking Apple already, but they just go through the whole wipe/restore malarkey. Their ultimate solution was to upload my music onto a clean iPhone (i.e. where I've not restored anything) which I thought was an extremely undesirable option!

As an alternative, if anyone can recommend a good/friendly iPhone/iTunes forum where people are amenable to working out esoteric sync problems... that would be great too!
