I was just watching BBC4 in the UK. There was an ad for BBC Radio 6 music where they ask a lot of well known musicians who their own favourites are. One girl answered 'Ennio Morricone' but I don't know who she is. Anyone?

I can't play it, but the pic above is Alison Goldfrapp. I hope she goes back to blonde soon. Their previous album, Tales of Us, is VERY Morricone-esque, in a good way, and highly recommended.

Most likely it's her, and her partner Will Gregory has composed concert works for orchestra as well which few to EM and John Barry (the song Pilots for example) styles.

She is well known ennio fan and devotee. She was at the London concert for his 78th birthday for sure.

Thank you all. I'd like to think she's a secret member here, eagerly awaiting release news like the rest of us.

Maybe it’s Bill.

“He” was pretty sure about her being at the London concert...

Erm...she was sitting behind me. And i read about it in a music mag interview!
Portishead, damon albarn of Blur/gorillaz and few others were there too.

Morricone is a bit of an industry secret. Publicly not widely known, per se, but among music people, songwriters, Pop stars and bands, hes a God. They know a rich vein of ideas to be mined when they hear it.

It’s all relative. If Morricone and Ollie Murs were strolling together through the Arndale, I know who’d get the most attention.

It's a well-known fact among morriconians that Allison Goldfrapp is a huge fan of the Maestro. Goldfrapp's first album FELT MOUNTAIN appears as a blatant tribute to Morricone in several tracks: high-pitched voice à la Edda, whistling also performed by Allison herself, etc let alone clear hints at specific tracks (LE CLAN DES SICILIENS, a secondary track from GIU LA TESTA). And if you read carefully the thanks section, there is no doubt whatsoever: "Allison thanks Ma, Pa and family, Sir Steve, all the old girls, Ennio, Hazel and all mates xxxx."
By the way, FELT MOUNTAIN which was classified in the trip hop category is a fascinating album, dark and moody, one of the very best I heard in pop music ever. I listened to a couple of other albums by Goldfrapp but they changed direction completely (having done more dance floor-like stuff) and I never found that magic again. Maybe I should try the one from 2013 that's been mentioned in this thread.

Laurent, you should- it's a return to that Felt Mtn. style. and away from the glam-synth sound.

Seventh Tree also has some acoustic 60's style songs amid more electronica songscapes - great album that starts crossing between styles. The most recent album goes back to keyboard lane.

There is a video set on YouTube of 'Tales' songs which I haven't watched yet....shame on me. I've played the album a ton to mnake up for it however.

As a big fan of that band and an even bigger EM fan, I happily endorse it, for what it's worth. Happy discovering smile

I always thought she was more of a John Barry-kind.

Worldwide I would say possibly so. But here in the US, after a lifetime of Morricone devotion, I would agree with Bill. We only know his American scores and the handful of foreign ones that became popular here. The US never took to spaghetti westerns like the rest of the world did. Methinks this is because the rest of the world became used to dubbed films, and had them done expertly, by having all Hollywood films dubbed. We were used to originals and dubbing from here was weak and made fun of (like Godzilla). Hence Morricone is only known from a fifth of his films. It is like if you only heard a fifth of John Williams scores, depending on what fifth they were, you might not know what all the fuss was about and think he is overrated.

This seeps highly into fandom. A number on here consider the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences "a joke", partially based on items like Morricone, for quite a while, had something like 6 nominations and no wins. He now has two (including a life achievement which I consider worth 6 of the others) and in a sense they have caught up. But amongst IFMCA which has many more categories and many more foreign films considered he has won none.

All this came crashing down on me at my two Morricone concerts where I finally had performed over 30 of my favorite Morricone tunes which practically everyone said were new to them. BTW it was like pulling teeth to get "fans" to these. And yet when I shared invitations with the Society of Composers and Lyricists I filled the place. That is when I came to the conclusion my true compadres were in the musical arena and not amongst fandom. The nail on the coffin came with one "fan's" remark who said 'I will go out my way if you do another STAR TREK concert, otherwise I pass". Nuff said.
