I ran into Carol Goldsmith at a screening of the new Charles Fox doc called "Killing Me Softly With His Songs". Wonderful doc. The subject of The Goldsmith Odyssey was brought up and I mentioned you folks REALLY know your Goldsmith. She did not know about it, but asked this, "Is it respectful?" I said oh yes very respectful and I said you'd be pleased. Thought you may want to know smile

Thank you so much, Peter!

Now that is quite a coincidence. I just re-read A Separate Peace for the first time since high school and then watched the DVD of the film version that was in the cinema around the same time (1972). And there's the name "Charles Fox" in the credits. Nice, simple score that did justice to a rather grave story. Good choice to use T. Dorsey's "Opus One" for the opening credits/action, too.

Lotsa music in this one, specifically Panu's (smiling, on the right). That picture is a good characterization of our guests, so I do hope you enjoy this.

It was an un planned Part One, only because their film is in theaters now and it would have taken too long to produce the entire show and get it out in time. They actually came aboard to talk with us about Thriller: What Beckoning Ghost, which comes out next.

Here's Clark's description!
While we've been honored to have both composers and directors appear on The Goldsmith Odyssey, it was a particular treat to welcome our first director-composer team to the program: filmmaker Amin Maltaqa and composer Panu Aaltio, whose new film 5000 Blankets is playing in theaters December 12 & 13 (and will be streamable in the months ahead). In this Odyssey Interview, Amin and Panu tell your humble hosts Yavar, David, and Clark about their deep and abiding film music fandom, their love of Jerry Goldsmith, their collaborative process, and much more! Naturally you'll hear plenty of excerpts from Panu's new score: a melodic, emotional work marked by memorable themes, striking orchestrations, and a welcome sense of old-fashioned romanticism. And stay tuned for our next regular episode, in which Amin and Panu will join us for an examination of Jerry's score for the Thriller installment “What Beckoning Ghost?” Enjoy!

And by “in theaters now” we mean: *today* is the second and final day of its limited run.

Regarding THE HOLLOW MAN, if anybody wants to know where these hand written Paul Verhoeven kind words about Jerry Goldsmith come from, well, they actually come from this deluxe Kanagawa october 2000 japanese concert program...

Nice finds, Thierry! The little note is a treasure.

Thank you!

And I agree (on the first!).

Yes, thank you! Our fifth anniversary was actually technically almost three months ago, as we debuted March 1, 2018. We recorded our celebratory show with Jens joining us a couple weeks into March 2023, but due to circumstances (including needing to do time-sensitive Production Reports on another Leigh Phillips GE Theater recording, as well as Jeff Bond's Jerry Goldsmith Companion book) we just weren't able to get out the episode until this past week. I'm really proud of it and think it turned out fantastic, though. Here it is, for anyone who hasn't already subscribed to our podcast and heard it smile --

Modesty prevents me from starting my own thread, but I wanted to go on the record and thank Yavar, David and everyone at the Odyssey for hosting me on the latest episode. I had a blast talking to you!

After 25 years working for FSM, Intrada, La-La Land and Percepto, I have a few stories about our favorite hobby—-and I hope you’ll check it out.

Besides, everything sounds better with a “heapin’ helping” of Jerry Goldsmith music in the background. ;-)

It was such a pleasure to have you on (both times) Joe!

Glad you enjoyed the conversation too, Graham. smile

Jeez, I've really been remiss in updating this thread when we have new episodes. I should fix that.

Great episode, guys. Hey, what is the Gerald Fried cue that pops up about 15 minutes in?

I'm starting to miss this podcast! It's pushing 2 months since the last interview or spotlight, and 5 months since the last actual episode. I hope the gentlemen involved are OK! I realize they all have real jobs elsewhere.

Thanks for asking! We are fine, just busy with life as you surmised. Don’t worry, we aren’t going to pull an Art of the Score on you! wink (So glad they came back!!)

Just this past weekend we recorded a new regular episode on “Guillotine”, the last remaining un-Tadlowed Thriller score. But before that comes out we actually still have a couple regular episodes “in the can” from last year still to get out to you. One (the next one) is substantially edited but taking longer than normal because it is our longest episode to date!

So hang in there a little longer and you’ll be rewarded I think…

Your audience very much appreciates all the work you put into them. Although I think that if Goldsmith himself had lived to hear it he'd be completely bewildered!
