Waxman was a chameleon, he chose the style to fit each movie, and was incredibly gifted. But that's the very thing, sadly, that kept him sometimes below the radar: he submerged his own trademark style for the sake of the movies.

I think the FSM Silver Chalice actually has pretty decent sound for a 50s mono mixdown.

There actually already *was* a rerecording, WA, and almost certainly the only one this score will ever receive. It was part of Elmer Bernstein's Film Music Collection series in the 70s (same one that produced your beloved Ghost and Mrs. Muir rerecording as well as the best Torn Curtain recording and a few Rozsas...)

I don't know about Silver Chalice because I don't have it. I did obtain Bronislau Kaper's The Prodigal. I don't really listen to the whole thing a great deal, however, I do frequently listen to the beginning and concluding parts of the score. My, what a powerful voice the guy had. Now, there are two versions of the finale where sonny goes back home to papa, who then throws the feast to give thanks for sonny's return. That music never fails to impress!

I think Steiner did that, too.

The second disc of the Silver Chalice is the one that has some of the most interesting (musically) pieces. Waxman messed with dissonances....not as subtly as, say, Alfred (who, like JG after him, liked to add special things like false resolutions or actual resolutions that didn't resolve quite "right", taking themes into far out keys, among many other "hi I'm just stopping in to remind you I'm a Super composer check this out") goodies.

Too bad I'll never see that Bernstein (a composer I just haven't clicked with, besides his super cool conducting of other folks' works). Would love to hear a REALLY recent recording of SC though.

Was still working on an email reply to you re: Bernstein. He was so prolific and diverse I strongly believe there is stuff of his you would love; you may just not have started with the right ones.

To Kill a Mockingbird in particular I think you need to try appreciating in film first. It's one of my favorite scores of all time, but it might possibly not be one you "get" without hearing it in film. Fortunately the film is also a masterpiece.

That's the one I forgot! Amazing score and movie...and I DO have that score smile

In fact, kind of itching to see the movie again.

As great as Bernstein's music is to Magnificent Seven, Great Escape, etc. - and it IS great, I think his strongest suit is the chamber-like scores he did. Case in point: Summer and Smoke. A gorgeous masterpiece.......
