Forgive me if this has been discussed, but is the La La Land edition of The Fury worth the upgrade if I have the Varese Deluxe version? The Varese sounds mighty good, but I love the La La Land treatment of their releases. Anyone?

Yes - you get both the complete original soundtrack, alternates and source music as well as the album re-recording with the London SO and everything beautifully remastered. In short, you get more on the La La Land release.

Here's another vote for the LLL. In truth I don't listen to the film tracks nearly as often as I do the album re-recording, but it's still really nice to have, and there's plenty of good music not on the LP presentation - it plays as a different listening experience altogether.

That being said, it really is hard to understate just how damn GREAT that LP is - both the program as a listening experience, and also the quality of the recording itself. The sonics are just amazing! And the re-tooled cues like "For Gillian" are just such a delight. Williams is almost always a treat as is, but this, like the equally-underrated JAWS 2 from the same year, are just true marvels in an already full and amazing career. Many argue that roughly '77-'83 were Williams' finest years as a composer and I think I overall fall into that camp - and THE FURY is just another shining example of musical excellence from this extremely inspired window of his career.

Get that LLL album stat!

I actually like this score better than the Star Wars stuff (but then, I'm not a fan of Star Wars in general). It's music like this, Close Encounters, and Family Plot (but not only) that have me squarely in the "fan" demographic of JW.

I have to decide between the Varese deluxe and the LLL. I have read from two different sources that the LLL packaging is superior to the Varese 2002, however I have also read that the difference in sound quality, etc. isn't really that significant from the Varese.

I also have a film score friend who outright strongly advises the Varese.

I really love the LSO performance of this score. While the original is
More complete I prefer the sound, the feel and the structure of the recorded version. It sounds very dramatic and more
Ominous.

Hi David! When you write the about the recorded version, are you talking about the Varese or LLL?

I've been looking more into this, and it does seem that many people like the sound of the LLL better, period, and consider the Varese deluxe to be...well, made obsolete thus.

The Varese is cheaper (well, a little)...

Slight edge to LLL.

THE FURY is one of Williams' best in my opinion. I remember hearing that director Brian De Palma asked Williams to evoke Bernard Herrmann. Does anyone know if this is true? The score certainly does have some Herrmannesque passages.

The LLL is the way to go. While I love the film tracks, I'll echo the sentiments that the re-recording is even better. Not only do I find this to be the best John Williams score, but I've long considered this one of the greatest scores of all-time. Absolutely worth picking up - a masterpiece.

Yeah, this is a great score, definitely on my Williams Top 10 (and probably his most Herrmanneque, WA!)

Probably, yes. Although the main theme from WITCHES OF EASTWICK has always sounded even more Herrmannesque to me.

This is very interesting. I did hear some of that on the YT clips, but liked how JW incorporated his personality in the overall scheme. His wonderful, swirling, chimey way with the orchestra is unmistakable imo.

Anyhoo, The Fury LLL is in my queue. But I still have a date with Kritzerland for Alfred and Jerry smile

Oh yeah, it's definitely strong in Williams's own style. It just gets a bit Herrmanneque in atmosphere at times; one would never mistake it for the work of Bernard Herrmann IMO. Also the next time you place a LLL order, you *need* to get Jane Eyre, my personal favorite Williams score from the same fertile time period of the 70s.

I was delightedly surprised to find how much I like the score, and not just because I'm not exactly the world's biggest fan of JW. All I even remember about the movie is how it seemed to have a hard time deciding whether it was an action or horror flick. And, of course, Andrew Stevens (was that really his name? WOW! lol) blowing up.

I've chatted with other fellow soundtrack enthusiasts about this. As a Williams fan, I buy everything released hands down. I think that the Varese version sounds a bit cleaner (if I'm not mistaken, I think the gain was set higher on the LLL version for the LSO recording and there's a wee bit distortion in places but don't quote me on it).

I own the original Varese as well as the LLL. Glad to have both but I think I'd defer to the Varese....

I still need to get the Kritzerland Jane Eyre (you know who).
