I actually like this score better than the Star Wars stuff (but then, I'm not a fan of Star Wars in general). It's music like this, Close Encounters, and Family Plot (but not only) that have me squarely in the "fan" demographic of JW.
I have to decide between the Varese deluxe and the LLL. I have read from two different sources that the LLL packaging is superior to the Varese 2002, however I have also read that the difference in sound quality, etc. isn't really that significant from the Varese.
I also have a film score friend who outright strongly advises the Varese.

More complete I prefer the sound, the feel and the structure of the recorded version. It sounds very dramatic and more

This is very interesting. I did hear some of that on the YT clips, but liked how JW incorporated his personality in the overall scheme. His wonderful, swirling, chimey way with the orchestra is unmistakable imo.
Anyhoo, The Fury LLL is in my queue. But I still have a date with Kritzerland for Alfred and Jerry

Oh yeah, it's definitely strong in Williams's own style. It just gets a bit Herrmanneque in atmosphere at times; one would never mistake it for the work of Bernard Herrmann IMO. Also the next time you place a LLL order, you *need* to get Jane Eyre, my personal favorite Williams score from the same fertile time period of the 70s.

I was delightedly surprised to find how much I like the score, and not just because I'm not exactly the world's biggest fan of JW. All I even remember about the movie is how it seemed to have a hard time deciding whether it was an action or horror flick. And, of course, Andrew Stevens (was that really his name? WOW! lol) blowing up.

I've chatted with other fellow soundtrack enthusiasts about this. As a Williams fan, I buy everything released hands down. I think that the Varese version sounds a bit cleaner (if I'm not mistaken, I think the gain was set higher on the LLL version for the LSO recording and there's a wee bit distortion in places but don't quote me on it).
I own the original Varese as well as the LLL. Glad to have both but I think I'd defer to the Varese....
