I am my avatar! I was looking to buy this classic for many weeks and today finally had my chance.

I was especially relieved when I read that the Freud cues are not prevalent on this reissue, as I already have (and love) that score.

I've never heard anything but samples of this release on youtube, and am greatly looking forward to the 2 disc.

I realize this is a topic probably done to death, but I wanted to share my exhilaration and promise.

I've loved it ever since I first read the movie tie-in book back in the late 70s (ole Alan Dean Foster). The film itself is one of the best horror films I've ever seen, right up there with Jaws, Psycho, The Thing, Shining, and Halloween.

I wasn't completely wild about Aliens, but found interesting darkness in III and would someday like to score that soundtrack as well.

Freud cues are in fact *nonexistent* on this issue, as they have been on every previous Alien soundtrack release.

That's actually a little bit of a shame, because the Varese Freud Deluxe Edition actually does not include the versions of a couple Freud cues actually tracked in Alien, so they have never been released on CD (the Varese has alternate versions). This will all be fixed if some other label one day produces a definitive version of Freud. As Goldsmith's first Oscar nomination, I hope so!

Just imagine an LLL or Intrada Freud...happily sighing.

I believe there were two or three older scores from JG that Ripley purloined for Alien. And that JG was raging nearly as virulently as Alfred over GSOT about it.

That said, unlike the jarring and badly advised addition of both Verdi and Handel to the GSOT score, the Alien soundtrack was the first I'd heard of those Freud cues, and I thought they sounded good in the Alien film.

My favorite by Goldsmith

Terrific use of instruments and orchestrations, and a great theme.

He seemed even more upset about having to rewrite his superb Main Title. I don't think there were any other older scores besides Freud used, though of course Howard Hanson's 2nd Symphony was used for the end credits in place of what Goldsmith wrote.

I have hope for a Freud reissue (slightly expanded, with the missing alternate version(s) that I think were actually on the LP, plus any other small unreleased bits). Varese released Link on CD years ago, only to have *both* Intrada and then LLL reissue their own versions of it, without even including any additional music! And Varese released Magic in their Club series, only to later have LLL reissue it with only a single 25 second previously-missing cue to expand it. With Freud's pedigree, it seems like one of the other labels will get to a definitive version sooner or later.

I'll be all over it!

I must admit, it was hard for me not to lock right into the Varese Magic. I love the book and liked the movie, but the score is probably better than either. The love theme is one of JG's most gloriously beautiful pieces in my opinion. Glad I passed up on the LLL in that case, though I'm not used to saying that.

I'm confused why...no one has said a bad word about the LLL reissue, which was the same program as the Varese, except they added the one 25 second missing cue and IMO greatly improved the packaging thanks to the magic touch of designer Jim Titus. Heck, if I knew you wanted the Varese I would have been happy to pass along my copy to you, since I replaced it with the LLL when they had a sale a couple months back.

Ewps. This is an example of me not reading carefully, forgive me please. Sounds like a missed opportunity...but I must mention, I REALLY like the sound on the Varese.

I'm currently debating still the Varese deluxe and LLL Fury, there really is a polarized set of opinions on those two.

One of the thing I hear in Alien is the influence of one of my favorite modern composers, Krystof Penderecki. JG's interest and composition in serialism is one of my favorite aspects of his writing (though he toned a lot back for his post-70s work).

It's strange to me that, in today's world of sound design (and technological advances concerning), there aren't more serial composition-esque scores out there today. Bishara kind of qualifies, but he has often betrayed a well concealed streak of the Romantic too (a balance I think JG achieved on more than one of his scores).

I finally got around to buying the Alien set late last year (I missed buying soundtracks, so I went mad & bought Alien, the Lethal Weapon box set & the three disc FSM Wild Bunch set). When you think it's for a science fiction horror film, Alien is such an elegant score, that main title, perfect!

I am my avatar! I was looking to buy this classic for many weeks and today finally had my chance.

This is possibly my all-time favorite Intrada release, and my favorite Matessino/Redman production. Back in the day, I obsessed over this movie and I loved the score, which perplexed me in its enigmatic OST album form. Finally getting all the pieces that I'd wanted all those years, with Mike Matessino's terrific liner notes, was like opening a treasure box. Bravo, Mike, Nick and Doug for putting this out. Hope it continues to be available for others to discover.

Yay! I was obsessed with R-rated movies as a young kid...Alien, the Omen, Halloween, Boys From Brazil, Exorcist, Apocalypse Now. Most of them I simply read the tie-ins for, since I wasn't allowed to watch them at the time. I'm delighted to add that all the movies except the (weirdly cast and, well...just too out there) Boys From Brazil exceeded my expectations.

Once you've gone for a spin, it would be kind of interesting to see what you think of the back-to-back nature of Alien and TMP. Did one score up the ante for orchestral/non orchestral cavorting in the other? In other words, is there reasonably strong influential bias overlap between the two in ways that do not appear at first glance to the interested audience? For instance, Alien has less continuity in form than does TMP, but they both employ - without being overbearing in any way - novel sound associations that are totally unique to each. JG knew just how much sweetener to add without ruining the concoction.

It does not need a reissue

It does not need a reissue

The Varese DE does not even have all of the musical content from the original LP, so why not? As I pointed out above, other things have been reissued multiple times with less to add.

Hell, RUNAWAY, an all synth score of all things got an initial Varese release, 2000 copy Deluxe Edition, and THEN they did an Encore edition of the Deluxe program. If that can happen, anything can happen.

TMP is definitely a milestone, and proof of JG's potency even in the face of the spectacularly succesful Star Wars. Once he got that main theme written, it was no holds barred; TMP is a total triumph imo.

I could even get used to the Blaster Beam upon repeated listenings. I liked its presence until the very end of the first LLL disc, where I got a little worn out. Of course, I still had some extremely wonderful listening on the rest of the release... smile

WOW, really? And there isn't even a rerelease for It's Alive or Double Life/Indemnity since...when? Dumb.

WOW, really? And there isn't even a rerelease for It's Alive or Double Life/Indemnity since...when? Dumb.

FSM officially premiered It's Alive in 2012, their fifth-to-last release ever. It's still in print and doesn't need a rerelease. Double Indemnity was released in as-complete-as-possible form in 2015 by Intrada. It went out of print about a year or so ago, so probably too soon for anyone to bother with a reissue.

A Double Life, Rozsa's second Oscar-winner, has on the other hand never been released (outside of a fine re-recorded suite on one of Rozsa's Polydor recordings in the 70s)...this may mean the original recording has been lost to the ages and we can only hope someone decides to spend the (considerable) money to fund a complete new recording.

So nothing about this is dumb. smile Well, maybe aside from Varese Encoring Runaway: The Deluxe Edition before encoring the far superior The 'Burbs: The Deluxe Edition...I'm sure they had their reasons, though.
