Funnily enough, WA, I recently got out that non Intrada CE3K and actually played it, rather than the MP3 version, on my Panasonic CD player, for probably the second time since buying it. Boy oh boy, was that a warm feeling. That score is way better than the film itself at telling the story.

CE3K is an excellent score!

I'm just posting here to praise this score some more. Recently I've been listening to it quite a bit both at home and in the car, and the mood it creates is powerful isn't it?

Goldsmith's mastery of the orchestra is unparalleled, and the way he expands the palette with unusual instruments (and even a conch shell!), coaxes unusual sounds out of familiar instruments, and creates bizarre, unsettling textures by combining different sounds...well, this is absolutely stunning stuff. I've listened to Chinatown a LOT over the years, but I have great admiration and awe for what Goldsmith did here that it's quickly becoming my favorite score by him.

I'm often tempted to put together a version of the score as it was used in the film, even though it ran afoul of the composer's intent. I find the film version to be a hypnotic alternate vision, similar but different.

You should put together exactly the listening experience you want. I love the planet music, all of it, and it folds together well, the alternates with the originals, so I often sequence the score like this:

24. Main Title (4:11) (Rescored Alternate)
25. Hyper Sleep (2:46) (Rescored Alternate)
26. The Terrain (0:58) (Rescored Alternate)
04. The Terrain (2:21)
05. The Craft (1:00)
06. The Passage (1:49)
27. The Skeleton (2:30) (Rescored Alternate)
07. The Skeleton (2:31)
12. The Skeleton (alternate take) (2:35)
08. A New Face (2:34)
28. Hanging On (3:08) (Rescored Alternate)
09. Hanging On (3:39)
10. The Lab (1:05)
12. Nothing To Say (1:51)
11. Drop Out (0:57)
13. Cat Nip (1:01)
18. The Eggs (2:23)

01. Main Title (4:12)
02. Hyper Sleep (2:46)
03. The Landing (4:31)
14. Here Kitty (2:08)
15. The Shaft (4:30)
16. It's A Droid (3:28)
17. Parker's Death (1:52)
19. Sleepy Alien (1:04)
20. To Sleep (1:56)
21. The Cupboard (3:05)
22. Out The Door (3:13)
23. End Title (3:09)

29. The Cupboard (3:13) (Rescored Alternate)
30. Out The Door (3:02) (Rescored Alternate)

I mean... that's crazy but I love hearing those cues together. Do what you enjoy!

It may be crazy but the music is just so good that even the "rejected" cues are worthwhile listening.

Yes! And they hang together, as above, much better than I'd thought they would when I first combined them so.
