The nominees were:

APOLLO 13 James Horner
BRAVEHEART James Horner
SENSE AND SENSIBILITY Patrick Doyle
NIXON John Williams
IL POSTINO Luis Bacolov

I would have found it a tie and given Horner 2 Golden Boys. For APOLLO 13 and BRAVEHEART! Truly Outstanding and perfect for the films.

Nixon. Outstanding and effective score.

Of those, maybe BRAVEHEART.

But I also love APOLLO 13 and NIXON. Have never really explored SENSE & SENSBILITY, but it's 90s Doyle. I love the theme. IL POSTINO, which won, was the least good, IMO. It's not a bad score, but it's not terribly interesting either. More of a 'one trick pony'.

I'll still say BRAVEHEART. And although I've become a LOT more cynical since 1996, about Hollywood hokum, Scottish heroes and life in general, I can't ignore the fact that every time I catch a bit of BRAVEHEART on the telly, I still think, "Golly, that's a wonderfully-scored scene". I'm veering more and more towards "really old stuff" in my choice of listening, and it's quite sobering to think that BRAVEHEART was 22 years ago. 22 years before that was 1974 and my actual conscious awakening to film music, and 22 years before that it was 1952, which sounds so distant in time that it may as well have been 1852.

I will give it to Horner I guess, but I find both Apollo 13 and Braveheart among his very best. I will say Braveheart then.

BRAVEHEART James Horner.

It's my favourite Horner score and one of my top 10 favourite scores of all time!

As a music lover I am happy that such music fair was written during that year.

who cares what the best dramatic score was? I have three of them and love them all.

My choice?

This is George Fenton's The Crucible.

Horner deserved uncle Oscar. Picking for which score is Sophie's Choice, though.

With only a narrow margin, I'd pick Apollo 13. I love Braveheart and it certainly is one of the most effective film scores ever written. There's no fault, very cue is spot on.

However, it's quite in your face. Braveheart's score is -- like the film, the main character *and* the personality of the director -- not very subtle. And I love how nuanced and meticulous Apollo 13 is. And where Braveheart has more traditional approach, Apollo 13 is an amazing piece of contemporary music.

So the oscar goes to: Apollo 13

Back when all five Oscar nominations were scores worthy of purchase - and I did purchase them all. Those were the days...

It was always between BRAVEHEART and SENSE & SENSIBILITY for me (Doyle was a demigod in the early to mid '90s).

Wow, never thought of that. Quite shocking, I own all these 1996 Oscar-nominated scores, and there are actual recent Oscar WINNERS I do not own!
As for the original question, much as I love Williams, I'd go with Braveheart on this one.

Who won? I thought Apollo 13 was just awful.

IL POSTINO was fine for me, of what is there. But Jerry Goldsmith's FIRST KNIGHT, Marc Shaiman's AMERICAN PRESIDENT, Patrick Doyle's THE LITTLE PRINCESS and even one of my few Elfman favorites DOLORES CLAIBORNE would trump it if they were nominated. And don't get me started on other foreign scores with mini-masterpieces like Ennio Morricone's SOSTIENE PEREIRA and Alexandre Desplat's LES MILLES in 1995 (the year we are actually talking about).

Braveheart, but my favorite track of the year was All systems go - The Launch for Apollo 13.

1996 was a year when there was also a comedy/musical Oscar for best score. 'The American President' was nominated in that category. Others: Pocahontas (the winner), Sabrina, Unstrung Heroes, and Toy Story.

"Les Milles?" Ah, someone has done his Desplat homework! smile
Glad you mentioned that, Morricone - it remains one of his best.

Yes, it's so easy to pick another five worthy scores from 1995 for a strong alternative list. As I said, those were the days...

Il Postino for me. What a great tune that flavored the entire score.

96 may have been a good best score year, but what about the 69 Oscars?

The Lion in Winter
The Fox
Planet of the Apes
The Shoes of the Fisherman
The Thomas Crown Affair
