My choice?

This is George Fenton's The Crucible.

Interesting - I'm a huge Fenton fan normally, going back to THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, about which I wrote a huge article for CINEMASCORE. Having just rented the film, I pulled THE CRUCIBLE out to listen to again and it left me as indifferent as before. It was as though Fenton was instructed to avoid composing music that might elicit actual interest (much like most action and sci-fi scores these days)!

I'd be very curious to hear what you like about this score. I would love to be brought around ...

[Edit] Ah, I see you did explain farther down the thread, Zardoz.

... But I still don't get it! :-)

If we've now moved to 1996 scores beyond the Oscar nominees (which it seems we have), there are plenty of other great scores that belong on my favourites list: INDEPENDENCE DAY, THE ROCK, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, TWISTER, WHITE SQUALL, MARY REILLY, FARGO, THE ARRIVAL, DRAGONHEART, THE PHANTOM, A TIME TO KILL, THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS, MICHAEL COLLINS, SLEEPERS (which for me is a superior score even to the aforementioned NIXON), THE DIG, STAR WARS: SHADOWS THE EMPIRE, TO GILLIAN ON HER 37TH BIRTHDAY, THE SPITFIRE GRILL, FREEWAY, KARAOKE/COLD LAZARUS.

1996 was an important year for me. I graduated from high school that summer, then moved out of my parents' house and to Oslo for university studies in the fall. I was exploring film music like there was no tomorrow (I had already been a fan for a few years, but this was the period where I was really firing on all cylinders). So obviously, I have an extra strong connection to these scores from my formative years.

I'm bumping this in the selfish hope that some people will take a chance on those scores (especially the Japanese ones) I posted.

ESCAFLOWNE in particular would be in most people's "Top Ten of the 90's" if they were familiar with the work; it's just magnificent music all around.

Also great call on COLD LAZARUS, Thor. That's a terrific Gunning score, and I just LOVE that romantic string theme that pops up a little after 1:30 in the below video.

Unless I overlooked it somewhere, I don't think anyone has noted that the first message in this thread listed the 1995 nominees instead of the 1996 ones.

An honorable mention must go to Don Davis' THE BEAST, which has some damn good moments - the big emotional send off in the below cue is quite breathtaking and the action music (reminiscent of Horner at this time) is often very strong. Excellent-quality thematic orchestral scoring for a real turkey of a JAWS rip-off that didn’t need or deserve music as good as Davis wrote. Perhaps nothing wildly “original” on display but excellent craftsmanship and orchestration dexterity:

While I'm sure it's a good listen on its own, I just watched this film a few nights ago (it's a 2-part starring William Petersen and a bunch of actors who....can't really act. I'll say it's a clear product of its time from television) and the score was one of the worst aspects of the film because it was far too cheesy and overbearing. If that was the intention it was a complete success.

I'm not terribly surprised to hear that. Even as a four year old, when I watched this on TV upon its original premier, I remember finding the whole thing incredibly corny. I didn't notice the music at the time, however, but that many have subconsciously played into how eye-rolling the film was. Oh well - I like the music on its own!

If not for Petersen, I'd never have bothered checking it out. Sure enough he sold the seriousness of this dreck completely. He was clearly committed to the role. Should've been nominated for an Emmy for that alone!

Yikes. That's a good point.

By the way, we've done several "best scores of [year]" threads here. There was even a period a few years ago the board was overflowing with them. Just click the search engine and type in a given year.
