One of my all-time favorite old films!

60 years ago last night the world premiere of Rodgers and Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC took place at the Criterion Theatre in Ney York on March 19, 1958.

This is a beautiful, classic example of Hollywood's ability to make incredible entertainment. The first time I saw this was around 1964 at a new, big (1200 seats) beautiful theatre with a 70ft wide screen. And as if the new theatre wasn't enough, the stereophonic sound and film itself swept me into an amazing awareness of what it was that I was truly interested in; namely theatre, art and film.

To this very day, the scoring of Rodgers and Hammerstein's familiar songs is utterly glorious, the stereophonic sound is breathtaking and the film itself affects me in so many ways that I can't begin to explain.

I got a crush on Mitzi Gaynor at that first time (and sailors too), and it was truly a peak experience in my life. It changed my life... And I don't give a rats pink, puckered, furry little ass what others think about the color filters and the film in general. Anyone who rags and bitches about what it isn't has no sense of fantasy, taste or humor. For me, it's perfect.

I hosted a dinner party and a Bue-ray screening last night for friends. One of them had never seen it and was as impressed with it as I've always been.

Now if only all that lush and elegant scoring could be available in an expanded soundtrack.

It will be theaters again for only two days in August. See it on a big screen and you won't forget it!

Also, one of John Williams' earliest film assignments.

I don't think I've ever seen the film.

I was just discussing this on another site.

Despite its faults (those bloody filters!), I still love this movie.

It simply looks and sounds Glorious!

It is still the UK’s longest running movie. It opened at The Dominion theatre, Tottenham Court Road,London on April 21st, 1958 and ran there, in its original Todd-Ao Road Show presentation until September 30th, 1962.

A total run of 4 years, 5 months and 9 days. A record that will never be broken!

Since it's the 60th anniversary, I wouldn't be surprised if SOUTH PACIFIC will be part of the line-up during next month's TCM Classic Film Festival. They often have screenings that correspond to a milestone. It would be great to see it in either the TCL Chinese or the Egyptian theatre. In fact, I seem to remember reading that this film premiered at the Egyptian.

The current roadshow dvd is still missing one scene.
When Joe cable goes to BaliHai on the boat, he sings a reprise of Bali Hai with the shorus.
One of the commentaries mentions this was never shot - not true.
I had at one time the cutting continuities of the prevew and roadshow versionsof South pacific and that scene was in both.

They also cut the scene where Joe goes to the Bali Hai and he can't decide if he wants a Mr. Bali Hai or a Fogcutter. He ends up going for the Mr. Bali Hai because he wants to bring home the mug. He ends up ordering several, and the night doesn't end so well.

Yes Howard, I know. But it's a holy grail and an absolute died in the wool obsession. I love the movie and that incredible scoring. Shoot me.

c'est la vie (or however it's spelled.) smile

there are a number of AMC / TCM showings coming up for August. Question is if any of the cast (Mitzy?) will do a special red carpet? that would be amazing! Wonder what Liat looks like 60yrs on too? bet they still look dropdead!
