One of my all-time favorite old films! 60 years ago last night the world premiere of Rodgers and Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC took place at the Criterion Theatre in Ney York on March 19, 1958. This is a beautiful, classic example of Hollywood's ability to make incredible entertainment. The first time I saw this was around 1964 at a new, big (1200 seats) beautiful theatre with a 70ft wide screen. And as if the new theatre wasn't enough, the stereophonic sound and film itself swept me into an amazing awareness of what it was that I was truly interested in; namely theatre, art and film. To this very day, the scoring of Rodgers and Hammerstein's familiar songs is utterly glorious, the stereophonic sound is breathtaking and the film itself affects me in so many ways that I can't begin to explain. I got a crush on Mitzi Gaynor at that first time (and sailors too), and it was truly a peak experience in my life. It changed my life... And I don't give a rats pink, puckered, furry little ass what others think about the color filters and the film in general. Anyone who rags and bitches about what it isn't has no sense of fantasy, taste or humor. For me, it's perfect. I hosted a dinner party and a Bue-ray screening last night for friends. One of them had never seen it and was as impressed with it as I've always been. Now if only all that lush and elegant scoring could be available in an expanded soundtrack. It will be theaters again for only two days in August. See it on a big screen and you won't forget it!
