Who owns the new master used by Kritzerland? Did LLL pay Mike or Bruce to use it? Is this title considered a sure thing or are sales secondary to the goal of having it in the LLL catalog?

Fox owns the master. We paid Mike to redo the Varese release because he felt it could be improved. It is that master that LLL is using. I have no control over that - was just curious if they were at least paying Mike for the privilege of using it. This is always the way it is. Varese issued our Heaven Can Wait - I had to spend a ton of money mixing it from the sixteen-track tapes, we issue it, it eventually sells out, and another label can just come in and use the fruits of our labor - a bit weird but we don't own the rights to anything that is licensed. A couple of the titles we issued from the Herrmann box didn't have sonic upgrades but we still had to pay for a new master to be created. But here, they can really just use what we used.

So in the case with DAY EARTH, was it Mike's choice to share his improved version?
Or are you forced to give FOX your new improved copy, and they give labels the choice of which master to use?

Forced? That's an incorrect way to put it.

When we license product from a studio it's still their product. If I borrow my neighbors lawn mower and decide to fix it up on my own dime I still need to give it back to him . It's his property.

Maybe there's no good analogy (except "stud farm") since there are now two versions - the one you rented and it's offspring, but I get that they own it no matter what.....which makes me surprised they let us keep copies!

Bruce, you might be interested to know that the credits for this edition are Nick as producer for Fox, MV and Matt as executive producers of the reissue and you and me as producers of the restoration, as it was done under your label and the program and master has not changed. Of course La-La Land paid me for the work on this, which involved making and delivering a new DDP, now with ISRCs, and for gathering all the essays together and reviewing the art.

Mike M.

Well, lovely! And I encourage anyone who didn't get ours to jump all over this, seriously. Mike's work is stellar. There's no upset from me at all - we sold what we were going to sell, just as with all our Herrmann releases. It's all good and Jim Titus is great. Between him and our Doug Haverty, cover art and packaging is in excellent hands.

So, Bruce... please forgive me for being so ignorant, but YOUR release(Which I have, of course!) and the new LLL release sound exactly the same.... is this correct?!?!?

Yes, exactly the same in every way. That's been stated here now several times smile

I used the same Sonic project from 2014 when we did this for the Robert Wise centenary and made a new DDP with encoded ISRCs from Fox, which they now insist on for all releases. Uploaded to La-La Land's plant rather than Kritzerland's. Those are the only differences.

Glad Its released again to whoever missed out, I'm passing on this one because I have the 3 previous, well done to La La keeping it golden/age, Herrmann always sells consistently.

Unfortunately, Journey is one of the Herrmann scores Varese owns in perpetuity so the chances of a LLL Journey are slim to none right now.

I do wonder if there'll be a day when Varese (now under new ownership) decide that they'd be better off selling on the rights to these in-perpetuity titles to labels that would be keen to re-release them, rather than have their assets crumble away to dust, earning nothing.

The score is now in public domain so anybody can put it out.

No.
Certain recordings, including ELVIS! , from the 50's have copyrights expired. Amoeba has carried this this title from other labels because of this.
