Does anyone have any information on the new remastered star wars cds that are coming out?? They come out May the 4th, but will the sound differ from the past Ultimate Box set with the Stormtropper on the cover???

This thread should answer your questions:

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=126331&forumID=1&archive=0

To quote Jason LeBlanc:

"The press release specifically says "reconstructed", so these are NOT simply the 2016 editions on CD.

The 2016 editions [which Disney Records reissued in 2017] were just new transfers of the final analog-edited LP masters from 77/80/83. Meaning they were the best sounding version of ancient analog-edited LP masters.

A true reconstruction would mean they grabbed every take of every cue from the earliest possible generation elements, digitally transferred them in high resolution (the press release indicates Shawn Murphy supervised this transfer), then re-edited the album programs out of those takes using modern digital editing technology."

So... No Celebration Victory (1997) in The Return of the Jedi on these releases?

Nope - these are reissues of the OST programs from 1977, 1980, 1983, 1999, 2002, and 2005 (obviously with reconstruction/remaster/etc as mentioned above).

For Return of the Jedi:

1. "Main Title (The Story Continues)" – 5:09
2."Into the Trap" – 2:36
3."Luke and Leia" – 4:44
4."Parade of the Ewoks" – 3:25
5."Han Solo Returns (At the Court of Jabba the Hutt)" – 4:10
6."Lapti Nek (Jabba's Palace Band)" – 2:49
7."The Forest Battle" – 4:01
8."Rebel Briefing" – 2:22
9."The Emperor" – 2:41
10."The Return of the Jedi" – 5:02
11."Ewok Celebration and Finale" – 8:00

So, people have been waiting for complete-score releases of AOTC and ROTS, they go to all the trouble of reconstructing the music just to release a 10 track OST? Then what was the point of going to all the trouble???

To say that these could've been all-new complete score releases with the highest sound quality is a definite missed opportunity.

I'd think of it more as a "beta test" than a missed opportunity; if these get good publicity and feedback, maybe they'll do something extra down the road. This is just the beginning.

I'll be getting the LP presentations of the original trilogy. I never had them before.

I thought Lapti Nek was lost (outside of the 4 disc anthology). And the original Ewok Celebration?- Cool!

Unfortunately, the bulk of this presentation is concert suites- This always felt the most incomplete of the 3 original albums.

As they are straight copies of the original albums, it would have made more sense to keep the original album art and follow through with the retro feel of the releases. The new covers are horrendous.

Yes. And why is there actual artwork on the cover of Attack of the Clones, but not on the other five? That's just weird.

Indeed a complete waste of time and effort. Can someone please tell my why there has not been a complete release of AOTC and ROTS and corrected full release of APM?

The fan reaction/backlash over the Ultimate Edition of Phantom Menace seemingly killed the prospect of any prequel expanded sets. Lukas told a great story about explaining to a record exec why folks were complaining about the UE and what they really wanted and the reply was something like "to hell with those guys".

These are wonderful releases. The original LP of New Hope is superb, as well as Empire! Come on, I have been dying for remasters of those. The 1986 CD of A New Hope sounds awful. The downloads are mediocre. The vinyls are good for vinyl collectors, but that's not what I personally want. Empire LP has never been released on CD ...

And Jedi, I agree, it's a terrible album with way too much missing, but it's the reality of what we got in 1983 due to increased costs to produce vinyl. Nevertheless, the sound quality will be excellent. Not to mention getting better sounding Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones (those always sounded too hissy to me).

I am all for definitive releases down the road. I agree, they are overdue. The 1997 special edition assemblies haven't held up well over time...

The most ideal release would be individual 3-CD sets or maybe even 4-CD sets. Disney are pros at releasing beautiful sets for their soundtracks (their animated ones are really nice). But it seems that Disney will trickle these things out as they feel suitable for their business model. Time will tell!

Are these first generation masters for remastering for the original sets of albums?

I think you might be confusing "hiss" with "endless amounts of boring dialogue scoring."

I don't own any Star Wars albums. None. I've been waiting for a proper, modern mastering of everything from the original trilogy.

Maybe someday.
