Well, we took the plunge. We booked our annual June vacation and rented through Airbnb for the first time. I think I did my homework and ran it by my son the nomad and Airbnb habitue and he thought it looked good. If it works out, we may book our upcoming family vacation the same way. Fingers are crossed.

For our uk residents im deducing edw has gambled on an airline? Or some kind of holiday company that handles all your requirements?
Her destination remains a mystery.

Where have you been hiding these few years, Bill? Airbnb ... airline / holiday company?

It's become so popular that some cities have introduced restrictions!

I've only tried it once -- when we rented an AirBnB apartment in Vienna in September. Everything worked smoothly.

I remember also APPLYING for a space when I went to the US west coast in 2012, but I wasn't accepted (or the renter didn't respond). Probably because I had no previous experience or feedback at the time.

If you do your research properly, and gain some sort of fruitful communication beforehand, it's usually a very safe way to go.

Two of my best friends - now a middle-aged married couple (how time flies) spend about eight months a year travelling. Just last month they finished a six-month holiday travelling around Spain, staying for about a month or six weeks in different places. I visited them in Seville and Valencia, and the properties looked fine, even exceptional, although they mentioned that in one or two places they'd been, the "safety" aspect didn't seem as strict as it perhaps should have been (multiple plugs in electrical sockets, cables across the floor etc). Still, they loved it and are doing it again, all via Airbnb, starting in the summer.

Good luck with your Airbnb experience, ed. I would be surprised if the health and safety inspections were lax anywhere. Don't they need a license? Maybe my friends stayed in a few bootleg Airbnbs...

One of our extended family members has a flat in Greenwich on Airbnb and makes an absolute mint on it. The swine.

Swine indeed. I'm more jealous though of my young (he's 56, she's 45) friends who can spend eight months a year on holiday and never seem to have to work. Not even for the other four months of the year.

That's a fair point, Graham. People like that get on your nerves. I regularly get patronised by an acquaintance who retired from the legal profession in his early fifties.

I've had three airbnb experiences so far and all have been terrific. Hope you have a great trip!

Hmmm, I could be mysterious and say the south of France but I can't fib. No airline needed but I am gambling on a quaint mainland fishing village. If this works out, the family is headed to the South Pacific within the next year. smile

Good feedback and good wishes folks. Thanks all.

Well, the verdict is in on our first Airbnb experience...stellar. The accommodations exceeded our expectations, the host is one of the kindest people we have ever encountered in our travels and we ultimately paid less than two-thirds of what we paid the last 5 years of vacationing here. We will actually hate leaving this year for reasons beyond the simple fact that our vacation has come to an end.

Glad to hear it worked out so well, ed. And the best part is that you can do it again!

Oh tidy, i bet they do. I love Greenwich. Was going out with a girl who lived there for a year. It's certainly better than Charlton. Shudder.

Wonderful! Yes I have had a few times where the host was so amazing that I would stay again if I returned. Our host in Buenos Aires made our trip much more memorable than it would have been otherwise.
