My husband and I are going for the first time this year. We're really looking forward to it.

Are any FSM-types going? Have you been there before? Any advice to a newbie?

Any advice to a newbie?

Yes. Give a very wide berth to the "Attention US TCM Subscribers" booth.

(Kidding, Mr. Grant!)

I live in Hollywood and the TCM events are just down the street from where I live. Unfortunately, I have never been to the TCM Film Festival so I don't know what advice to give except maybe to bring sunscreen, an autograph book, and to make sure your camera is in good condition for lots of photos.

My spouse and I are going. We went for the first time last year and had a blast! What you'll experience is watching movies on the big screen with other people just like you who know classic film. Also, unlike typical theatre experiences, you'll find yourself having conversations with people sitting around you before the show begins. Everyone is so friendly.

The only down side is having to deal with the schedule. Like last year, I'm finding that some films I want to see are being shown in different theatres at the same time. Why didn't TCM call me first before putting the schedule together? ;-)

My husband and I are only seeing a few movies together. He's going to see some old favorites; I'm mostly going to see movies I've never seen before, like "Finishing School", "Throne of Blood", and "Kramer Vs. Kramer". I never need to see "The Ten Commandments" again, even if it's on the big screen.

I am so looking forward to this. And a side trip to Amoeba Records and that delicious soundtrack section.

I understand, but I'm a sucker for seeing big roadshow features the way they were meant to be seen. The other roadshow picture I can't wait to see is GRAND PRIX in the Cinerama Dome. I saw it as a teenager during its original theatrical run so it will be a trip down memory lane. Those race sequences are astounding. Plus Eva Marie Saint will be there to introduce it.

Well, I didn't get to see all the movies I wanted to. I got aced out of "Finishing School" not once, but twice, as they re-played it on Sunday. I ordered the DVD, so at least I'll get to see it at home.

Saw "Detour" and "Throne of Blood" opening night.
"My Brilliant Career", "The Set-Up', "Creature from the Black Lagoon" in 3D, and "The Exorcist" on day two.
"Kiss Me Deadly", "Kramer vs. Kramer", "Maurice" (what an amazing score!), "Show People" (which was interrupted by a false fire alarm"!), and "The Raven" on day three.
"Places in the Heart", "Silk Stockings", and "The Phantom of the Opera" with the live orchestra on closing night.

Fourteen movies in four days. Movie hangover the day after.

Can't wait until next year's festival.

Picked up copies of Bernard Herrmann's "Cape Fear", Ennio Morricone's "Red Sonja", and Jerry Goldsmith's "Link" and "IQ"/"Seconds" from Amoeba Records.

What a trip!!!

I just knew you would get hooked, RR. Apparently our paths did not cross movie wise. I saw:

The Producers
Grand Prix (roadshow presentation in Cinerama!)
None Shall Escape (this was our favorite -- a devastating film made before the end of WW2 that presaged the Nuremberg trials)
Leave Her To Heaven (nitrate print)
This Thing Called Love
Wife Versus Secretary
Where the Boys Are (poolside screening at the Hollywood Roosevelt, complete with singalong of the title song!)
Woman of the Year
The Ten Commandments (also a roadshow presentation in an amazing 4K restoration at the Chinese)
A Star is Born (1937 nitrate print)

I'll definitely be back next year for the 10th anniversary festival (which is also the 25th anniversary of TCM).

I went to Amoeba records too. Picked up Goldsmith's WARNING SHOT, the Spielberg/Williams box set and a 4-disc compilation of Les Baxter exotica albums.

Eva Marie Saint was hilarious during the presentation. She was interviewed by Leonard Maltin and it became clear that this isn't one of her favorite films. She said there was "too much driving," and Maltin replied "Isn't that the whole point of the movie?" He then went on to say that this is what the audience came at 10AM to see. Saint replied "Are you chiding me?" At age 91, Ms. Saint is still very sharp.

Excellent verb choice.
