I just re-listened to the Music Box CD of this score... It is certainly one of George Delerue's finest, most heartfelt scores.

I then re-watched the film and was TOTALLY blown away by how Delerue's score is such an integral part of the storytelling process.

I have both the VHS tape put out by Altantic/Media back in the day and the newer DVD put out by Scorpion/IBV/Kino-Lorbeer.

A comparison:

Maybe one day, we will get a version that has the best of everything, but as it stands, the VHS has more vibrant color, and boasts very clear stereo sound; however, it is full screen and has a horrible Moody Blues song over the closing credits which just comes totally out of left field and absolutely ruins the beautiful mood built by Georges Delerue's heartfelt score throughout the film. THE DVD, on the other hand, has a clearer picture and is letterboxed at 1.78:1, plus retains Delerue's original end title music in its entirety; however, the sound is MONO, and rather warbly mono at that.

If you can find the Altantic/Media VHS, grab it, just for the wonderful stereo soundtrack and the the great color. even f you are stuck with that Moody Blues song at the end.

Does anyone know the history regarding the Moody Blues song and why it was incorporated into some prints and not others? Even the ending credits are different. one giving credit to the song, and the other (obviously, the version which used the original Delerue music), having no such song credit.

I remember YEARS ago I found a cut out copy of ASS(BAD ACRONYM! big grin) at Camelot Music for $1.88(In the picture long box!)... that was my introduction to Delerue.... and I haven't been the same ever since!

Glad to see there are other fans if this extraordinary (and overlooked) film.

For a long time, I searched high and low for A Summer Story on DVD, and finally found a Korean release of the film several years ago.

The Korean DVD is, unfortunately, in 4:3 -- and horizontally stretched to 16:9. But it is otherwise a nice-looking transfer (all-region NTSC), and Delerue's score sounds great -- stereo and no warbly sound. It also contains Delerue's end title -- not the Moody Blues song!

I don't know who released it, since the label's name is in Korean! However, two different Ebay sellers are offering it for under $10...

I hadn't seen the film in a couple of decades, but bought this new Blu-ray when it was announced. This is NOT one of the best looking Blu-rays in my collection, which is considerable. I spotted dirt, scratches, a reel-change mark on this blu-ray. The outdoor daylight scenes were nice, but when things were in deep shade or at night, you might just want to forget trying to find out any details. It was nice to get see the film again as 'an old friend', but both the Blu-ray, (and myself), have, I feel, seen better days.
