https://www.varesesarabande.com/collections/on-sale-1?page=1 The amazing Family Plot and Red Pony are only FIVE DOLLARS! :O :O :O The Alfred Hitchcock Hour Vol. 1...TEN DOLLARS. A Gathering of Eagles is also FIVE DOLLARS. At the price of only FIVE DOLLARS, I'd even recommend Jerry's all-synth score to Runaway! (It feels "orchestrated" and there's some good stuff...I just wish it were played by orchestra!) And for only EIGHT DOLLARS, more than worth it to pick up STAR TREK NEMESIS: THE DELUXE EDITION (2 CD set). Not *quite* as amazing a deal, but Goldsmith's very good List of Adrian Messenger is at $10 -- still 50% off! Alfred Newman's THE SNAKE PIT is a MUST at FIVE DOLLARS. (And you get a nice bonus score with it too, so they're like $2.50 each, new!) I'm not always crazy about Bill Conti but his North & South music is among his very best, and they have his complete Book II miniseries score, originally $40 (3 CD set) for only FIVE DOLLARS. Insane. $1.67 per packed disc. I'm also honestly not a big Alex North fan but he was Jerry's mentor so I'm strongly considering getting the titles of his they've also marked down to five bucks! And then there's The Virgin Queen and Crime in the Streets by Franz Waxman for only five bucks each, Elmer Bernstein's *lovely* score to A Walk in the Spring Rain...also five bucks. If you've been curious at all to try Michael Giacchino, LOST: The Last Episodes are some of his very best work, ever...2 disc set for $10. Same goes for Jupiter Ascending...good stuff! At the same price, the same recommendation goes for Ennio Morricone's Bloodline, Nuno Malo's No God, No Master (listen to the sound clips), James Horner's Cocoon: The Return, Elmer Bernstein's Spies Like Us, and then there's this six disc set that is now the price of a single CD: https://www.varesesarabande.com/collections/on-sale-1/products/back-in-time-1985-at-the-movies Seriously this is the most incredible film music sale I've seen in a while. Thought you guys should know! Yavar

Thought you guys should know! Yavar Thanks for letting us know, Yavar. Is the duration of this sale known? I hope Varese will offer these prices for more than 2 weeks (perhaps even for 1 month) so that this sale won't elapse prior to everyone's (collective) paydays.

I didn't notice any duration stated; it's just called "Spring Cleaning Sale" on their site. It's actually pretty depressing to me that amazing scores like Family Plot and The Red Pony didn't even sell well enough permanently on sale for $11 each new, that they now have to be discounted to $5! (Anyone with the money who doesn't get them at those prices is NUTS, in my opinion!) Seriously these are among the greatest works of John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. Yavar

Lots of that going around, it seems. At these totally insane prices anything listed "fewer than 100 copies remaining" (like North and South was) probably isn't likely to last long. They must really want to clear out some space. Here's hoping that's because another Club batch is imminent. Yavar

Yavar OK - let's hope these prices won't alter before May 11th. Some people's paydays will be April 27th and others might be May 4th, so holding these sale prices through May 11th should give folks enough time for purchases. As for the descriptive 'amazing', Yavar, this could be applied to any soundtrack whose music one loves (and therefore subjective). Speaking for myself, Alex North's Pony Soldier and The 13th Letter are 2 'amazing' musical compositions. Though I am a Goldsmith bottle-cap type collector, I haven't been enchanted by The Red Pony. The track I like most is "The Buzzards", but most of this score is in that Americana idiom which does not appeal to me. This may be one of the reasons why The Red Pony has not yet sold out - its musical vocabulary is far removed from aesthetics and preferences of sci-fi/horror geeks. Another reason for this 1973 TV Movie's lack of purchases/customers is that it's something that was not repeated throughout the ensuing decades via multiple broadcasts or home video media. The Red Pony was not something that burned its way into the minds of generations of viewers. But I agree that it is depressing that consumers do not take chances (i.e. spend money) on music from movies with which they are unfamiliar. Even though I've seen neither North's Pony nor Goldsmith's, I've owned both these Varese CDs already since they were released, and the one I endorse for future customers is Pony Soldier. [FYI: I also consider Robert Emmett Dolan's The 3 Faces of Eve a much more satisfying listen than Alfred Newman's The Snake Pit - its disc companion]

I do endorse Viva Zapata/The 13th Letter specifically among the North releases; I already have that one because I like westerns. I'm well aware you don't share my love of Americana so it makes sense that The Buzzards is the only part of The Red Pony that you like; however I think for many people here the rest of the lovely score will appeal greatly. I suspect the main reason it's hung around is lack of exposure to the film, which has shockingly never been released on Blu-ray, DVD, or (I think) even VHS! Now Family Plot, a great John Williams score for Alfred Hitchcock's last film...that one is TRULY inexplicable to me (but maybe they overestimated the quantity on that one, if 5000 copies really were pressed). Yavar P.S. I also like the Dolan score (though maybe not as much as the Newman, but then Newman is a major favorite of mine) but his name would be unfamiliar to most people.

Now Family Plot, a great John Williams score for Alfred Hitchcock's last film...that one is TRULY inexplicable to me (but maybe they overestimated the quantity on that one, if 5000 copies really were pressed). Yeah, it's a puzzle why Hitchcock-related items are not guaranteed to sell. FSM's The Wrong Man is a poor seller, as with Varese's Family Plot and volume 1 of the AHH. Intrada deleted from their catalogue their edition of Herrmann's North by Northwest. (go figure) Universal France's digipak on Jarre's Topaz came and went with little message board fanfare or appreciation. Why this is so is anybody's guess ...

Well I'd say in the case of Topaz or The Wrong Man, they are less than thrilling scores. I mean, I love Bernard Herrmann but The Wrong Man is not a typical Herrmann Hitchcock score. Those run the gamut but this is surely the least enjoyable of the bunch. It fits the film like a glove though -- but then the film itself is also one I have no urge to ever see again, despite its very high quality. It's just a major downer, and not in a particularly I-want-to-see-that-again way, IMO. And Topaz is quite possibly Hitchcock's worst film of the sound era, despite a few brilliant moments. I can't remember the score at all, to be honest. But FAMILY PLOT on the other hand is a delightful and engaging movie (if dated) and the score is even better, just positively thrilling at times, one of my top 3 from Williams in all likelihood. I adore his usage of harpsichord in this one, and I usually am not crazy about that instrument...but Williams has a way with it in this and several other scores that just really appeals to me. Yavar

My top 3 Hitchcocks are all black-and-white and all before 1961: Psycho, The Wrong Man and I Confess. I love 'downer' material. Herrmann's The Wrong Man is more appealing to me than items such as The Snows of Kilimanjaro or Obsession. How can one ever expect to love the classic international cinema of Antonioni, Bergman, Bresson, Dreyer, etc. if one is unable to bring oneself to revisit The Wrong Man?

How can one ever expect to love the classic international cinema of Antonioni, Bergman, Bresson, Dreyer, etc. if one is unable to bring oneself to revisit The Wrong Man? The Wrong Man for me is mostly Vera Miles...in some ways I found her performance at the end creepier than Norman's. It's worth it for that, plus Fonda was certainly worthy of the role. To this day I wonder whether it would have been better as an hour tv show for Hitch. 1. Vertigo 2. North By Northwest 3. Rear Window

The Wrong Man is a dull score. Traded. Hitchcock vol. One is classic Bennie. Grab it! Family Plot is a mediocre film with a very entertaining JW score. Buy it! Brm
