In collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, Music Box Records is proud to present the expanded 2-CD edition of Nino Rota's melancholic masterpiece, Il Casanova di Federico Fellini.

Directed by Italian Maestro Federico Fellini, Casanova is an unlikely adaptation of the legendary womanizer's autobiography. In fact, the director made sure to keep only the barest minimum on details, instead focusing on giving his own interpretation of the character. Starring Donald Sutherland, this version of Casanova is a world-weary, somewhat melancholic traveler who attends lavish masquerades and dispenses his otherworldly lovemaking skills to anyone interested. A somewhat controversial film upon its release, Casanova has since then attained a cult following due to its lavish looks (he won the Academy Awards for Best Costume) and an unlikely score by Nino Rota.

Conductor Carlo Savina (who also orchestrated most of the score due to Rota's illness) said the music was a fever dream and there's really no better way to describe it. The bulk of the score uses rare Baroque instruments to create the mysterious mood, including a glass harmonica and the oboe d'amour. Following the melancholic main titles played against the images of the Venetian canals, the score keeps up its zaniness with the music for the Magic Bird, a musical construction who follows each lovemaking session with its own chirpy tune. Other highlights and challenges include an original opera excerpt for a bizarre stage show and a cello piece so heartbreaking it makes Casanova question his ways.

Casanova has had several LP and some (slightly expanded) CD releases, but this new presentation includes two CDs worth of music, including the original soundtrack album and all the additional material, adding up to 45 minutes of previously unused music. Supervised by Claudio Fuiano, this newly remastered edition includes an 8-page booklet by Gergely Hubai discussing the film and the score, based on an interview by conductor Carlo Savina. Limited Edition of 1000 units.

Also my all time favorite Rota score...I thought the prior expanded CAM CD would be the final word on this but I was wrong.

Its great news that labels are dividing scores with more Rota, lovely, I own the original its a quality classic, I'd be a fool to pass on this one, 1000 with substantial material/restored.

Thanks Music Box, very good work again, happy customer here.

Nino Rota's greatest score, which makes it one of the greatest scores of all-time. Amazing, monumental release.

Both the movie and the music are "out there," although not as much as FELLINI SATYRICON, if that's any recommendation.

Indeed! After Amarcord and Il Gattopardo, I was crossing my fingers for Casanova, a work of near indescribable beauty... and weirdness. Wonderful stuff!

Ten days to go. Bring it on. I even ordered the Blu Ray of this film ('restored' edition from the UK). Although a big fan of the score that I had on LP (the original CAM LP, still the best artwork with the submerged head and a great backcover of water reflection, a Japanese CD with the same program, the expanded Italian digipack and now finally the deluxe treatment on 2 discs) I never saw the film. So now I can at last hear the music in context to the images.

Like you Couvee, I've never seen the film and it's by far my favourite Rota score! What's amazing with it is that it doesn't have the old-fashioned aspect so many Rota scores had, even in the 70's. I don't mean it pejoratively but Rota sounded his age most of the time. After all he was born in 1911. On the contrary, CASANOVA is an absolute stunner, full of fantastic and mesmerizing instrumental and vocal combinations. Could Carlo Savina have played a decisive part in that "new" sound? Just wondering. I remember that Philippe Sarde once explained that Rota took over the idea of the glass harmonica after he himself used it in LE LOCATAIRE (also from 1976), and Savina was of course the link between both composers.

Also can anyone elaborate on the so far unreleased material compared to the LP contents?

According to Federico Savina - the sound engineer on CASANOVA and Carlo´s younger brother who is still alive -, Carlo himself suggested the use of the glass harmonica and also of its interpreter Bruno Hoffman to Nino Rota. Apparently, Rota was then very enthusiastic about the sounds of the instrument and how it would fit for the flm, but less so Fellini himself who was rather annoyed by it.

The music is divine but the film for which it was written left me cold. I seem to recall that thieves stole some of the film reels which required reshoots ?

I played the samples and like so much the overall atmosphere of this soundtrack that I will no doubt get this double CD for the sheer pleasure to get different orchestrations of the themes previously published. There is a feel of strangeness in this score that's just haunting. It's difficult to explain but it's like being thrown into a totally unreal experience.

Not familiar with the film or score but the samples sold it to me. Very atmospheric. Ordered.....
