I read on Facebook that the eminent Danish composer Søren Hyldgaard passed away today, after a long illness. He was only 55.

I never met him in person, but I've been aware of him since the 90s, and explored several of his works. His compilation album EYE OF THE EAGLE (pictured below) is IMO a must-have for all film music fans. Lush, melodic writing; quite old-school. I've never checked out his "New Age" albums, but now's the chance.

Anyways, very sad news for the Nordic film music scene.

I see that Bruce posted a RIP thread at the EXACT same time as me (down to the minute). Cosmic coincidence!

Søren was a great guy. Very open about what he did and about the movie business - and he had a great sense of humour. Met him several times over the years and he was always witty and friendly. And his music was always special, regardless if it was for a movie or one of his New Age-compositions. He will be missed.

Wow, I just picked up "Eye of the Needle" this year. It's a splendid compilation full of gorgeous music.
I really knew nothing about Søren, it was a blind buy based on the samples. Such sad news for a talented composer. RIP.

I worked and was friends with Soren for over 30 years...it was he who introduced me to the Prague orchestra when we recorded THE CHAPLIN PUZZLE conducted by Tony Bremner and recorded by Mike Ross-Trevor. We later did many other projects in Prague including his wonderfully colourful score for JESTER TILL. And of course his passion for Franz Waxman led to our re-recording of THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. He will be sadly missed is just not adequate as he shone a light on everyone he worked with! To lose both friends Johann and Soren in such a short time is heartbreaking ....

Sad news. 55. Man, that's way too young.
I only have the EYE OF THE EAGLE compilation by him on CD.
It's in my drawer, here in work with me today.
I will play it in his honour.

I have met Søren a number of times, primarily in the '90s as he was one of the founders of The Danish Film music Society and the last time was at the Morricone concert in Copenhagen. He was alway filled with great stories and jokes. Even though the illness was hard on him, his mind was sharp as ever. Even more important was his ability to make everybody feel comfortable in his company.

My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

RIP

I remember an interview with him in Soundtrack Magazine from the early 90s. I believe it was by Randall D Larson.

I don't know his New Age music.

I have only seen one film scored by Hyldgaard, Mørkets Øy (Isle Of Darkness) from 1997. Two tracks from the score is featured on this CD-single:

The compilation CD "Moments of a Dream" from 2001 will give you a nice overview of his film work and is very much recommended as a starting ponit. Some really lovely themes there:

it is sad to hear that Hyldgaard passed away. He had great talent.
About 15 years ago I personally saw him when he attended a live performance of his concert piece "The Hans Christian Andersen Suite" not far away from me in Stuttgart.

A little bit of the genius that was Soren.....snatches from his wonderful JESTER TILL soundtrack (excuse the dialogue) with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra which I recorded with him in 2003 .

The TILL EULENSPIEGEL (= JESTER TILL) CD can still be bought on Amazon Germany:
https://www.amazon.de/Till-Eulenspiegel-Ost/dp/B00014AUUU/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1525797073&sr=1-2&keywords=till+eulenspiegel+soundtrack

There are almost 30 minutes of Hyldgaard´s orchestral score on that CD (without dialogue). A fine score which many here probably won´t know at all!

I Was lucky enough to work with Sören since 1993 as producer and sometimes conductor. Sören was a very talented and versitile composer, Check out on youtube fx his trombone concerto.
Sören was an encyklopedia on film and music, loving like me the golden age of filmmusic. As James points out Sören was one of the the first to record filmmusic in Prague after the Communist breakedown We worked together on several filmmusic workshops in Denmark. David Raksin, Fred Karlin, John Scott and Bruce Broughton all came to Denmark because of Sören and inspirered coming composers. Sören will be missed by a lot of people who knew him as a gentle and generous person.

Listening to his compilation CD today, it was wonderful to hear the little call outs and homages to other scores that may have inspired him (or the director/temp track producer).
JNH's Sixth Sense in See You
Bill Conti's North & South in his Storm theme.
The world of Elfman and Shaiman in The Fakir suite.
That's not to say his own compositions weren't great. They are. A lovely call back to a time when film music was so well written, with thought behind it.
Hopefully his music will enthrall a new generation of film music fans.

Like Yavar, I was not familiar with this composer - but I enjoy the clips posted here a lot (JESTER TILL sounds delightful) and I will now actively seek out a few albums of his.

55 is indeed way too young. Condolences to his family and fans. May his memory live on through his music.

Eye of the Eagle is the perfect sampler album bobb.
You can pick and choose from it which scores you want to hear more of.

Sad to learn.

I happen to own a TV score CD ("Edderkoppen") of his performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by William Motzing in the year 2000 (not sure if James was involved already back then) that I was given as a gift by my late Danish friend Jens Christian Madsen. I will give it a new listen tomorrow.
